Beacon Hall will be running an event in a few weeks (Sunday, April 10th at 5:00 PM EST) submitting things to DEFINE.
Is there any kind of list of words sitting on any GM's desk we should work on? Also, what does one do about situations where the results of DEFINE SUGGEST don't go your way? I checked on some submissions on one of my characters from a couple years ago, but there seem to be some problems. Is there any way for me to prevent this as a player, or to dispute what has been done, besides posting here on the forums?
For example, I bought this off the shelf at a merchant once: some padded halfling-sized coudieres, which I'm betting many people may have to look up
>define suggest coudieres elbow pads
Check back and...
coudieres - DECLINED: The word or concept you submitted does not exist in Elanthia, so it doesn't need to be defined.
Or I see a strange animal...
>define suggest serval a spotted desert lynx
Check back and while approved, whoever modified it introduced a typo:
A long-limbed, log-earred desert wildcat.
I had another one declined because it was deemed sufficiently simple. However, that was not generally my experience with how dictionaries work. Is there some sort of harm for including more definitions?
The deathbot will come back eventually.

There are actually two typos in it, it should be eared, with one R.

You swing an invar-hilted serrated glaes falchion at an Ithzir seer!
Amazingly, the Ithzir seer manages to parry the attack with her staff!
The scintillating Debia swings an invar-hilted serrated glaes falchion at you

You can submit an amended definition if you think there's been an oversight!
>typos
If there is a typo in a DEFINE definition, please submit a BUG and we can look into it. The serval typos have been corrected.

There are some challenges that stem from the game being as old as it is. We don't have unlimited space to recreate m-w.com. Large entries can also cause lag or become corrupt. This is also why we keep the entries short and sweet.

Thanks for the reply, Vanah!
We submitted 18 new definitions during the events. We tried to keep most of them fairly short.
The space constraint makes a lot of sense. And yes yes I should know what a 'currant' is but I didn't; now of course I see them in the store in the UK (or they use it as an alternate noun for a kind of raisin here?). As for the length I actually felt if someone wants a full definition they can look up by another means (regular dictionary online, gswiki for GS-specific things, etc). DEFINE should be quick and easy, no doubt about it!
I'll be curious to see how our submissions go. I think like any other system, when you're new to it, it seems confusing or obtuse. Hopefully because we had several people together reviewing them, we could do more help than harm and some of our submissions can be accepted with little additional effort.
The deathbot will come back eventually.
