The WHISPER command will now properly put first person group whispers in the speech window (StormFront) so that they don't get lost in the story window.

GameMasters and NPCs who use bold speech will also go into the speech window (StormFront) as well for now on.

Thanks to the players who helped track these bugs in the #gm-questions channel on Discord.

YAY! Thank you very much!

As an aside, I'd love to see recite (and perhaps also sing) pushed to the speech window, too. It'd make for more communication quality of life improvements during events such as invasions.

Thanks for the update!

On a related note: can we get the OPTION to have the thought window function similarly to the speech window?

When someone speaks or whispers, I see it in both the speech window and the main feed...however thoughts ONLY go to the thought window and not the main feed. I'd like the option to have thoughts appear in both windows...same with the Death window while we're at it!

Once again, I think some people may hate this, so an option would be best...but currently it's odd that the windows work differently.

The usage case is that I prefer to see everything in the main feed...but while hunting or traveling many rooms with lots of screen scroll, I'd like an easy glance at the window to see if I missed anything.

Thanks!

Sing, recite, and think would be pretty big projects. It's something that I'll leave some notes on, I'm just not sure where in line that would ever come into play. I just looked at the code and it looks like a chunky overhaul.

Recite gets used a lot when an important message is spoken in a crowded room due to format. I would be happy if we had a way to make statements like that with out the need for recite.

Gotcha, thanks for considering it. Probably where it becomes most noticeable is during invasions when some will recite things so they can be seen in the scroll regarding warnings on what to attack/not to attack, etc. With too much scroll, they're easily missed - which is one of the things I absolutely love about the Speech window.

Perhaps people need to focus on breaking the workaround of using recite now that they have speech window. Common example of institutionalized workarounds generating requirements

Yeah, I was just about to suggest that. With the speech window having the functions needed to stand out during crowded times (invasion), might just be a good idea to move to that for the time being.

Keep in mind that not everyone uses Stormfront. Most new players will prolly be on the WEB FE, most MAC users will prolly be on Avalon, and there are plenty of people still using the Wizard FE or one of several 3rd party front ends out there.

I know how long people have been using Recite because they think it makes it more visible.

But ever since the Speech Window came into being ... all recite does is scroll the screen faster.

If people just gave instructions with regular speaking, it would not be anywhere near the trouble it has become.

Reciting to set things apart has always been a clumsy OOC workaround for setting words apart on a crowded screen. Fortunately, people no longer need to do that, so I hope they adapt to these excellent new changes.

Pushing something to a separate window creates a delay in how fast I'll notice it. If you just want it to be on the record, the speech window is the best. If you want a fast response, its terrible. If you want it on the record that you died from being diseased while camping, use speech. If you want to be undiseased fast, RECITE.

Pretty sure everything that goes to the speech window gets echoed in the main story window anyway.

This is definitely one of those things that's a player preference related to the way they set up their FE, which FE they are using, or what habits they're in. For example, when I attend the Drake's Vanguard stuff and Svardin says to RECITE to get unpoisoned or healed, I just shrug and know I'll never see it so I won't be helping them. My speech window is positioned right next to my game play window, so I see those much faster than I see RECITE, which doesn't go into my speech window. In fact, in the scroll of invasions, triage healing, and mass hunts, if you RECITE, I won't be helping you. Not because I'm rude. Because I won't see it.

See, this is one reason I don't use all those windows in Stormfront.... I'm never going see something that doesn't appear in the one I'm looking at. If I'm focusing on the speech window I'll never see that invasion critter that steps into the commons until after I'm dead and if I'm focusing on the story window I'll miss everything being said.

This is compounded by the fact that my monitor is wide enough that I have to turn my head to see what's happening at the sides. It's not bad when playing an FPS and I can can rely on my peripheral vision, but I can't read text out of the corner of my eye. So, I have everything in one window and rely on highlighting and formatting to quickly focus on important things. Unfortunately, this does mean that if you don't RECITE that you need healing during an invasion I might not see it in all the scroll and it's a constant battle to see what a merchant is doing when there's a dozen things with ambient messaging plus a couple dozen "pets" in the room (gods bless the ones that keep familiars/companions/demons/etc out of the room they're working in).

Here is the current breakdown of how people are logged in as of 9pm ET today:

StormFront/Wizard557
WebFE5
Other1

I can't really separate Wizard FE users due to Lich giving a false reading. I'd say realistically, it's about a 70/30 split for Storm/Wizard.

Keep in mind that Avalon now falls directly in that mix if the user is on Lich. While it may be 'unusual', it would be the work of moments for Tillmen and the Lich crew to expose the 'real' front-end in use for those accounts logged in with Lich active.

Most of the Mac users I've spoken with are using Parallels or something similar to run StormFront. This is what I do, as well (I'm a Mac user). Lich works best with StormFront - the GUIs and what not didn't work with Avalon. I think it would be a useful upgrade if Lich correctly reported the FE, but I fall into the "gimme oodles of accurate data" camp as you never know how you can use it to drive change in the future.

It is next to impossible for Tillmen and the Lich crew to expose the 'real'front-end in use, because (in short) the Gemstone server will stop sending Lich the information for all of Stormfront's extra windows, which Lich uses in its basic functions.

Your own Lich knows exactly which front end it is running. I use that all the time for scripts.

But whether anyone wants for Mister Tillment to track that - or if he wants to, is a completely different matter.

I rather like the way things are set up now.
