Alter Rules question on 09/18/2015 08:10 AM CDT

Got a question around alter rules. I know that Alter 9 forbids using materials such as drakar and rhimar for non-weapons "due to their unique and innate qualities." This rules out something like bringing a rhimar dagger to a merchant as alter fodder and have it changed into a rhimar figurine. However, if I already have an item that is made from these materials, can it be altered without significant change?

Specifically, could I alter "a gem-dusted rhimar dragon" into "a twisting rhimar dragon" or something?

We should totally be allowed to use rhimar & drakar in alterations involving food plates or drink containers.
(I'm thinking drakar plates [== never let your dinner get cold], or rhimar goblets and ice cream bowls [== never let your drink get room temperature/ice cream melt].)

But maybe that's just me.

I must confess, I cannot fathom WHY I can't go from a Rhimar dirk to a Rhimar ice-cream-bowl in an alter. I totally get why you don't want people to go the other way, since as a weapon the material has special properties, but there are plenty of rhimar/drakar etc. non-weapons out there and nobody is up in arms that they don't give you freezerburn or make all the food in your pack turn into the worst trail stew imaginable.

I have seen GM released rhimar boxes to keep fish cold, also seen it worked into scripted harnesses

I have rhimar worked into the show of an ice ring so it is possible if you're reasonable and don't ask for something ridiculous.

Any chance for a more official response to this question? I'd like to know before EG since that would be a good place to get a number of alters done. Are "special material" items effectively un-alterable (since they contain material players can't put into alters)?

Someone needs to put drakar on their tart kiln.

Any chance for an official response on this? I was hoping to get the answer prior to EG so I could have my alters ready, rather than holding up the line to discuss with each merchant (which just slows things down for everybody). If this isn't the right place to ask these questions, can somebody please point me to where that place would be? Been an open question for quite some time.

As long as you're not requesting a change to the original material of an item, it should be handled as a straight alter. Changing "a gem-dusted rhimar dragon" into "a twisting rhimar dragon" would (in theory) be okay -- however, "twisting" means it's moving, and that would be denied in an alteration. "Twisted", however, would be acceptable. As always, it depends on the item, and whether or not it has any specific alteration limitations due to any script the item may carry.

Thanks! I just wanted to confirm that there wouldn't be any "I have to change this to be an acceptable material" to alter it at all on such things.
