A while back I copied part of a guide giving good suggestions for what recipes to use to rank up. At rank 30 it says to do essence shards exclusively and to "trade all boil and simmer tasks". Is that still a good idea? I know the sysem has changed since it was first rolled out. I've done work in other guilds and I always thought trading was to be avoided, because you have to complete an extra task each time you trade and you could very well get the same task.

Here is the path which I followed for General alchemy. This was shared with me and I may have made a few edits towards the end. I believe this is still a viable training plan today but maybe folks can post some additional suggestions after reviewing it. When I finish mastering potions I'll post what I did for Potions and Trinkets as a Wizard.

General Alchemy training plan

Rank 2:
Simmer: Tkaro, wolifrew
Boil: Acantha, ambrominas

Rank 14:
Simmer: Basal
Boil: Yabathilium

Rank 16:
Simmer: Haphip
Boil: Yabathilium

Rank 18:
Simmer: Haphip
Boil: Torban

Rank 26:
Simmer: Sovyn/Wingstem/Bur-clover
Boil: Woth/Brostheras

Rank 30:
Essence shards EXCLUSIVELY.
TRADE ALL BOIL AND SIMMER TASKS.
SAVE ALL ESSENCE SHARDS.

Rank 35:
Ayanad clusters, S'ayanad clusters, and t'ayanad clusters EXCLUSIVELY.
TRADE ALL BOIL AND SIMMER TASKS.
Do not break down ALL of your s'ayanad crystals into ayanad crystals; you will need them later.

Rank 47: (Um, or sooner, if they reduced the number of ranks the crystals work for, I can't remember what exactly was reduced...)
Simmer:
glowing violet essence dust: Lesser mana-well potion (This only lasts through rank 49, so use all these that you have saved up first)
All:
essence of fire: Minor sneezing powder
pristine nymph's hair: Minor luck talisman
glowing violet mote of essence: lesser mana regen potion

Rank 50:
Spirit shards EXCLUSIVELY.
TRADE ALL BOIL AND SIMMER TASKS.

Rank 59:
I,S glowing violet essence shard: Greater mana potion
B,I,S essence of fire: Major sneezing powder
B,C,I,S pristine sprite's hair: Lesser luck talisman
C,I,S radiant crimson essence dust: Greater mana-well potion
If you are an empath, you can make Hazy brown liquid essence and Full health potions.
If you are a cleric, you can make Hazy green liquid essence and Hazy grey liquid essence
I don't really know if making essences works for reps, but I'd assume so; it's a recipe.

Rank 60:
Everything from rank 59
B,C,I,S pristine siren's hair: Greater luck talisman

Rank 61:
Everything from rank 59 and 60 plus
C,I,S radiant crimson mote of essence: Greater mana regeneration potion

Rank 62:
Everything listed in ranks 59, 60, and 61 plus:
I,S radiant crimson essence shard: Full mana potion

The time and money it takes to find, forage, gather, grind, extract, and execute the simmer and boil tasks makes actually completing those tasks more expensive and time consuming than trading it and doing two or three essence shards instead.

Yes, you might get the same task you trade in. Yes, you might go from 1 point until next rank to 50 points until next rank. But overall, it DOES make the entire alchemy process go faster because you're saving components you will NEED later FOR later and you aren't wasting time gathering things for the tasks right now.

If you find it frustrating, go ahead and complete a task using the lesser health potion. Spend 90 seconds grinding per task. Waste precious s'ayanad crystals you will need later. Scavenge for the teeth you need for it. And then you'll feel either happy in your decision to trade those tasks and not deal with that, or feel that it isn't so bad and NOT trade tasks (some people do opt to do all of the tasks).

Or, alternatively, live a chemically free life!

Be it natural or alchemical. :)

Just looking at this list (especially post rank 35) made me cringe. I am both in awe and horrified that some people actually do alchemy. Crazy, crazy stuff.

^. Alchemy can go to the devil.

I've actually found it to be a lot of fun. Yes, it is a lot of work and a few of the tasks are mindlessly boring (specifically distilling water and sweeping) but overall there has been a lot of fun as well.

- The list tasks are sort of like mini scavenger hunts and have taken me to a number of areas I likely never would have visited otherwise.
- I have learned a bit about foraging and the local flora and fauna of several towns.
- I have learned a bit about skinning and as a result of hunting a number of areas below my skill in search of hides I have made some new friends.
- *I can now make some pretty interesting items with rockets probably being my favorite.
- I have had some fun/interesting interactions with fellow alchemists as a result of alchemy. Both as a student trying to figure things out and more recently as a mentor assisting others along the path to mastery.
- I now qualify to become a Guildmaster of my guild! This wasn't even possible prior to the introduction of alchemy and while I am hopeful that other avenues towards Guildmastership become available down the road it's cool to at least have one avenue through which this can be achieved.

*Alchemy is not something you should look to go into with the intent of making silvers or even breaking even. Generally speaking you can't even sell things you make at the cost of the components but assuming profit isn't a factor you can make some reasonably useful items for both yourself and your friends. I'm hoping that future alchemy expansions (or things yet undiscovered) focus a bit more on RP/'fun' items to released along the lines of dyes and rockets as I suspect the utility side of alchemy is probably pushed to the allowable balance limit already.

All right, this is mostly the same guide I am using. Thanks. I did trade a task to test it out and I was misrembering how it works. I lost 8 points to rank trading it and gained 10 points to rank on the new task. So that isn't bad at all. I had thought I would then need to complete two tasks before I got any points towards rank, but only the experience part of it works that way.

You say this now, but do not forget the Ardenal Surge potions. :)

And it's actually easier now than what it was when it first started.

If I ever had time to play anymore, I'd be done.

Oh, I'm all for YOU doing it. :P I'm actually on my last one of those potions. I'll have to get you to make some more or such.

Just drop me an email at the play.net addy, or if you've got time to stop by my shop in Mist Harbor, I've got a pretty good inventory in there.
