So I've been looking to upgrade my armor. The problem is I have no idea how to tell the difference between one style and the other. For example:

some studded brigandine armor

It imparts a bonus of +20 more than usual.

You see nothing unusual, except for a small enchanter's glyph.
It is rigid leather armor that covers the torso, arms, legs, neck, and head.

You could wear the armor around your chest.

It has been mainly crafted out of steel. (150,000)

VS.

some dark golden steel armor

It imparts a bonus of +20 more than usual.

You see nothing unusual, except for a small enchanter's glyph.
It is rigid leather armor that covers the torso, arms, legs, neck, and head.

You could wear the armor around your chest.

It has been mainly crafted out of steel. (225,000)

What the heck is the difference besides the descriptor?!

Do enchants go by 5's? Making these both 4x brigs?

Any help explaining this would be most appreciated!

Those are the same other than the description and possibly the weight.

+5 is 1x
+10 is 2x
+15 is 3x
+20 is 4x
etc.

Sometimes folks will refer to partial increments of 5 as the full enchant (e.g. +18 as 4x) as well but ideally they should indicate +18 and not call it 4x in these cases.

More details on armor can be found on the Gemstone home page at:
