I have a tackling warrior who got his full plate armor spiked, and has been quite happily tackling using spiked arm guards. Would wearing those spiked arm guards over the spiked plate, block the spikes from the plate? If I get hit somewhere other than my arms, can the spikes from the plate still hit the attacker, or do the arm guards take over?

Spikes are not reactive like armor flares are, they will not flare when you are attacked only when you preform a cman that will allow them a chance to. Personally I've never liked spikes, -10 on my maneuver rolls attacking and defending, no thanks. Now if they made the penalty something you can train away with an additional +20 ranks of armor or something, that would be neat.

If you only activate spikes using arms (tackle for instance) you do a disservice to yourself and armor by adding spikes to your torso.
Using only spiked arm armor you get the negative ten applied only when using arm cmans (you would not see a negative when wearing spike arm guards and sweeping/being swept) but when applied to torso you will see a negative mod on ALL cmans, whether attacking or blocking them.

>So I just screwed my armor by adding spikes...awesome, wish I woulda known that before I "won"...well that blows...
Depends just how good you are at the manoevers you use it with. If you normally get an endroll of 111 on a roll of 6 (i.e. only fail on a negative open roll) it can be a plus, particularly if the benefits of a high roll cap at low endroll. e.g. spiked legs for sweeping by a rogue master are likely to be beneficial. However if you typically have something like close to 95% chance to succeed, then spiking is bad. Putting spikes on my shield would make it worse for sbash, because a lot of the time I'm in that range of 85-95% success chance rather than failing only on a negative open roll.

Perhaps I am mistaken but last year before removing spikes from a set of torso armor I did some testing and felt that there was a negative mod defending vs sweep while wearing spiked torso armor/spiked leg greaves. There is also a negative modifier swimming into Nelemar while wearing spiked armor so having just greaves with spikes that I can remove without losing defense was a no brainer.

>Spikes are an offensive item only. The provide an additional offensive bonus, at the cost of being a little bit more difficult to attack with. As they provide no defensive bonus, they similarly do not apply any defensive penalties.<
So my armor is fine? Just has spikes like I hoped? I can stop crying now?
