I forgot, is it possible to summon a new companion and... has a ranger portal ever been discussed using our companions as a target, similar to the wizard portal?

thanks

I am a few trains away from being able to summon my companion but it was my understanding that you could dismiss or possibly lose your companion (through death/neglect/etc.) and then, after a waiting period, you could summon a new (i.e. different) companion.

Is this incorrect or am I misunderstanding the question?

This is incorrect. Companions never actually die, they drag themselves away and come back. Eventually. If you mistreat your companion, your affinity will eventually bottom out and you'll be stuck with a companion that hates you. For all intents and purposes, an animal companion is a permanent relationship, for better or for worse. Choose wisely.

Actually, when you first go to get a companion and cast 630, you CAN dismiss whatever shows up if you don't want that as a companion. But, once you've befriended it, you cannot get rid of it.
