Some items and/or spells come with built-in drawbacks. (AirWall/Spirit Barrier applying to your AS, also. I would have said Elemental Focus until just recently. "Sorrow" leaps immediately to mind. Coraesine weapons with their backlash.)
Now that Enhancives are around, the standard-level coraesine are probably a LOT easier to get along with, just by jacking up your INFluence a bit.
Could there possibly be a way--added to the Points system, a merchant coming around, quest to go on, Alchemy item, whatever--to help offset or mitigate these deleterious effects?
I realize that it is very much a "first world" problem to have, but I've now died to both sets of spellcasting dice I have. Hurl Boulder got me on the Major Elemental set, and Spike Thorn has done for me twice now. (I have been hit by (two and a half hours of) Sounds from the Ranger dice, but since it was a Bard that I have them on, he just Unraveled/1013'd it back off of himself.)
Both sets are set up so that 16 of the 36 results are bad, so 4/9ths of the time. Ranger is done as three results (6/7/8) are bad, while Major Elemental has five results (4/5/9/10/11) are bad.
If there were a merchant who could change that "8" to a "9" on one visit, and then later the "9" became a "10", and so on... sure, it would take a dozen hits make the Ranger dice 'safe' at 2/3/12. But it's a long-term goal worth shooting for.
