What about optional linking requirement, as a flag set by the patient? Set to OFF by default of course, so as to create minimal impact to the general populace.

DEMEANOR EMPATH COLD only prohibits healing while the patient is alive. I should have added in my suggestion, a method for allowing the empath "in." Perhaps it's redundant, but at this point I have just 1 BEFRIEND slot left open, and I use it just for the occasional empath that Naamit will allow to heal her.
