A new meditation ability for monks has just been released. Monks now have the inherent ability to resist chosen damage types through use of the MEDITATE verb. Although only one damage type at a time may be resisted, the monk may choose different damage types freely, at only the cost of a few seconds of meditative preparation each time.
The amount of resistance is 10%, plus 2% per bonus point as per a seed 1 summation of the monk's Mental Lore: Transformation ranks. Thus, a monk with 28 ranks of ML: Transformation would have a 24% resistance ability, and a monk with 91 ranks would have a 36% resistance.
Happy meditation!

Even though I'm not currently playing a monk, this is an awesome update that I'm very pleased to see. I remember making a suggestion about giving monks some form of meditation ability, considering the fact that meditation is a very fundamental part of real-world monkliness. Very nice addition, perfectly suited for the profession. Well done. :)

Did some testing with armor resistances and it stacks, in some capacity though I don't know how. The armor resistt is already ridiculous so its hard to tell how much more the meditation ability was helping :D But both the "armor deflects attack" and "your meditative preparation" (i forget the exact line) messages triggered when I was hit.
Re: HSN: Monk Meditation on 06/29/2015 02:55 PM CDT
The same messaging occurs with wearing, say, nature resist leg greaves over nature resist brig. The common understanding is that they do not in fact stack though the messaging seems to indicate otherwise.
Meditation could have different mechanics, and the community understanding could be wrong anyway. In general though I would expect the same mechanics to apply.
At some point I need to take some Taverkin hurl boulders to the head to test how how vulnerabilities and resistance stack. I have just been putting it off as the deeds and time are in limited supply. Shame those types of attacks can't be aimed... it would make it a far less daunting task.

That's the idea! Pin point sonic armors impact vulnerability, then put on an armor piece with resistance without sonics on and get the exact % of resistance, then wear both and get killed over and over and over until it hits the right spot.... Could take 1 death, could take 30 deaths, yay randomness!
If the resist overwrites the vulnerability completely it would be quick to say. Telling the difference between additive and multiplicative stacking will require a >50 raw damage shot, preferably >100 where I can not worry about the rounding. Since I have 138 health any meaningful end roll will kill me.

>How does this work with resistances on armor / armor accessories?
The higher resistance prevails; they aren't additive or multiplicative. On the other hand, vulnerabilities and resistances can both be in effect at once, and will counterbalance each other. It is unlikely to come up with a bard's 1014 and a monk's meditation for obvious reasons, of course, but perhaps with other armor.

but...i want them to be additive so I can be healed when someone hits me when I have max ranger resist + meditate :|
was the "nature" damage type omitted from the meditation abilities on purpose? :D

"Nature" isn't an actual damage type in GemStone. The categorization for Resist Nature (620) is specifically a hard coded list to add protection against certain spells. If a monk wanted to better defend against Spike Thorn (616), they can select puncture resistance when meditating.

Interesting, it did seem weird before. Thanks for the clarification!

Any chance monk can get the ability to walk others through guided meditation giving them the base 10% resist to a damage type? This would actually give monks a useful skill that others would be willing to ask (or pay) for along the same lines as armor support skills.
Example: Meditate Johhboy crush
You assume a meditative posture, sitting with legs folded and hands resting upon your knees. Following your guidance, Johnboy closes his eyes and breathes deeply, concentrating on his body and preparing it to resist crushing damage from any source.
