I'd venture to guess that they're trying to obtain goodies to put in a chest.

Any Robin Hood movie I recall seeing Robin and his band of merry men, they didn't just walk around with chests when trying to rob from the rich. They ambushed the rich and took the treasure. The bandits are out for your treasure because they don't have much to begin with.
