I'm thrilled to hear it -- I've been wondering whether one of the plated boxes I've thrown in a locker recently might have had the deed in it. Very low probability, of course, but the thought would have kept nagging at me until the deed was found.
Gratz to whomever has it!

According to the person who found it, who chatted on ;lnet soon after, it was some sort of coin. I don't remember exactly--"wide gold coin" I think. And it had the information of how to redeem written on it. |
Ug. I hope it wasn't actually a "wide gold coin", because that's very similar to a "dull gold coin", which is a common treasure system drop which most people consider to be useless and merely pawnshop fodder.
No wonder the first guy who found it just tried to pawn it.

Hence, I call them "mostly pawnshop fodder".
I would bet money that more of those things are trashed or pawned than are kept and used.
That is my primary reasoning for thinking they should not have made such a rare and valuable item so similar.

Agreed, to an extent. I don't think it's reasonable to expect that someone is going to actually type >LOOK [item] for every item they pick up or find in a box, if that item is highly similar to a common junk item.
If you saw "a crooked nail" in a box, would you LOOK at it, or register it as junk? The common junk item is "a bent nail".
How about "a cracked brick", very similar to "a chipped brick"?
And so on.
Is it a horrible transgression that the item was made so similar to another common, low-value item? No, it isn't. But I don't think anyone should be surprised that it slipped through the cracks a few times, and since that is generally considered A Bad Thing(tm), I think it'd be a good idea to make such items stand out a little more in the future. They don't have to be big and flashy in an in-game sense, but it'd be nice if some meta-knowledge of the game environment were applied when choosing the descriptions for such things.
I'm frankly surprised that it wasn't flagged as either too valuable to sell, or too valuable to drop. If I found an item that was either of those things, I'd sure as heck inspect it quite carefully to figure out why.

You're comparing true junk of no value to something that has a use and value at he pawnshop. There is a difference.

Not always. Dull gold coins, blue crystals, heavy quartz orbs, most wands...all pawnshop fodder to me, and many others. The point is, it resembled a known item that is often sold without a second thought, regardless of whether or not it's literally junk or just pawnshop fodder.
If it had been "a wide gold doubloon", that would have stood out more. Or, y'know, something a little more logical as the deed to a property.
Even if it resembled a scroll, at least people read those before deciding to toss them.

Making something of value that resembles something common has always seemed to me like one of the worse example of adversarial GM-ing. What is gained by making something that tricks someone into throwing it away other than a juvenile sense of one-upmanship? Is anyone's game play experience enhanced other than the creator's and his or her ability to cackle gleefully behind the screen afterward?

<<What ever happened to the general curious nature of us all?>>
I like gold coins for alterations, or something of a more simple nature.
For a PROPERTY! it should have some POW WHAM HERE I AM.
I would put it on the level of a real gem. I would honestly like to see SoAndSo just found a property deed.
In the box you see an official Icemule document/deed/something amazing.

The coin was "a large copper coin" for reference.
I realize that the private properties will always stir debate, regardless of release method.
As for the choice of the item type -- I announced pretty clearly, in the main announcements folder even, that the items would be in the feeders. I never said what they would look like. Part of the treasure system when it comes to the unique items is that you do need to look at your items from time to time. I'm not saying that all of the items you see are going to be awesome spectacular... but when it's been clearly announced, and you know there's something big hanging around in the feeders... you should look at what you take out of your boxes!
(That's also why I was keeping you guys up to date with whether or not the property items were found -- so that you weren't left hanging.)
As I mentioned to a player who emailed -- there will be more properties released this year. Some will be through the regular methods of auction &/or raffle. Some will be released in less seasoned methods. Either which way, it always behooves you to pay at least a modicum of attention (I'm not talking about crazy detail... I'm just talking about paying attention when it's been clearly stated that something's up!) to your surroundings and the items your characters interact with because... you just never know.

"a large copper coin" |
As the person who started this whole "that sounds too much like common vendor trash" tangent, I would have instantly noticed a large copper coin as something out of the ordinary. So, for me (and YMMV, of course) this discussion was perhaps interesting, but it was hypothetical as the actual item could not have been mistaken, at least by this set of eyeballs.

We started playing a game where every table leg is trash. To create a table leg that is in actuality a 10x runestaff with +25 ranks of harness power and spell aim is just insulting. When people look in the box, they're just going to see trash and no one is going to think "Hmm. This might be the one in a million table leg of power."
When the game is designed for certain things to be junk, nothing special should look like that junk or even very similar to that junk. Now, if they create an automated system by which junk items can often be special, THEN you will have a good point.

Well, I'm mostly satisfied by that, then. That's certainly better than "wide gold coin".
One thing to take note of, Kaikala, is that not every player reads the boards. Now I'm all for players using the resources they have, but it would suck something awful to find out at a later date that you trashed a property deed because you hadn't been reading the forums.
Looking forward to the next property release =)

I hear ya, Josh. But then I return with the question -- how many of those table legs may actually have been a table leg of phenomenal cosmic power? I know none of the ones I find are. ;(
However, your point is accurate only if there is a change to this style. But I'm driven by a single post, probably made sometime in the late 90's, that from time to time gets referenced.
It has to do with a GM bemoaning the fact that so many wonderful items are left undiscovered, on the ground, laying around, trashed with boxes, etc.
This was a manifestation of that in my personal view. And yes -- I'm still curious after all these years. Still haven't found that table leg of power just yet -- but I will always look.

Not too many are. However, I recall a post by a GM 3-5 years back that commented that his item was trashed. I forget whether it was a table leg, smooth stone, chipped brick or whatever, but it looked identical to common trash items.

I check everything that isn't a common trash item. If I see a pair of socks, a cloak, or something else that might possibly be GM made, I will check it. This is despite the fact that the treasure generator is responsible for most of these items.

As a copper coin, yes. If it looked like a common item or nearly so, then I disagree. With regard to your table leg of power, I hope you find it one day. ::grin:: Me, I just don't have the patience or time to devote to checking common items. My play time is limited and the odds that one of the box found items I find is also one of the rare common item look alikes is very slim.

I believe the very first smooth stone that went out was a rubbable Elemental Targeting item. (Or something equally cool and desirable; it's been a while since I saw the post, but I remember the same sort of thing you do.)

Both of the properties in Plat are still in the feeders -- your feeder rates weren't turned up while Prime's were, so I definitely did not and do not expect to see those found until the summer. I will definitely keep the Plat folks updated (probably via the Plat boards) when the rates are turned up once we hit June.

I love posts like these that give little tidbits.
You don't expect it to hit until summer... Does that mean there is some sort of "countdown" to pop special items?
