Is there any way to keep the standard non-premium locker when switching to premium? I so dislike the 5-piece locker that it is my primary reason for not switching to premium.

Your items will only sort automatically when you put them in the locker. If you put items in the chest, they will stay in the chest and you can ignore the sorting entirely. The items that were already in your locker would need to be consolidated, but if it bothers you that much it may be worth the time to consolidate.

Would it be possible, in an effort for efficiency, to "pool" premium lockers. Premium characters can each have a locker with a cumulative locker space greater than 1000 items. In many cases I would roll up a 'locker' character when I reach item limit in order to bypass item limit. Could locker space be distributed evenly among characters on the account or 'pool'ed into a single characters locker space should the account holder only want to have one character?

I think everyone asking for locker upgrades should probably stop wasting their time.
While I was happy we got the instant locker moving, it's an already known archaic/difficult system to work with that I have zero interest in wasting coding time doing these things people have been suggesting.

Actually, given that the Premium locker system already has "sub-sorters" and the code for them, it should be comparatively easy to add at least one of the things that everyone seems to want: an all-Account shelf. Anything on the shelf in your locker is available to any character on that account (in the same town; no mailing it to yourself on Teras or something).
That way the GMs would only need to add another one of the little sub-sorters (with slightly different rules, but the "per account" checking is already done for things like Major Enchants and raffle wins and...), rather than having to reinvent the entire wheel. I'm just asking for a hubcap, is all.

Because of the way locker items are stored, it would require an entirely new vehicle, not just a wheel.

You can already buy this "shelf" from SIMU if you want it badly enough. You can even have it walk around and train it to pick locks and heal wounds!
If I didn't require my "shelf" to be in Mist Harbor, I'd cough up for a basic subscription on top of my premium one in order to get it, but paying double to get a "shelf" is too high for me. I just let the janitor take a tax on my transfers.
