What is this extra surcharge? on 07/14/2014 10:23 AM CDT

All,

I'm considering upgrading a basic account to premium and had a question on the first month surcharge: What is this?

"A one-time pro-rated charge of $23.38 will also be applied, for a total charge of $63.33 for your first month only."

I can understand a pro-rated charge for the first month, as the basic subscription has already been paid for.

I can understand a pro-rated charge for the fire st month, plus the premium thing for the next month.

However, that's not what it seems to be saying. I read that as paying premium for this month, plus paying premium again for this month (pro-rated), plus paying premium again, immediately, at my next billing cycle.

Is this a) worded poorly, b) I'm not understanding something, or c) I'm understanding perfectly that there's a... penalty? Privilege-for-upgrading-to-Premium-tax where you pay twice for the first month?

You don't pay for premium separate from a basic account, you pay for a premium subscription that includes basic access. so you're paying for the pro-rate for the premium upgrade for the current month, plus the entire cost of the account for the first full premium month (I think that's right). If you downgrade before the billing date, you will only be charged the prorate for the current month, and the cost of the basic account for what would have been the first full month.

That's at least what happened for me for the CCF event raffle on one of my accounts.

I understand that it's not billed seperately, but for the first month it is an 'upgrade.'

Let's say my billing for my current basic account was July 1st, and I paid ~$20.

It's now July 14th. If I upgrade to premium, I would expect 1) to have the rest of the month pro-rated, and 2) the next month beginning on August 1st be full premium rate.

If I'm billed a pro-rated amount now, plus an additional full premium month today, I would expect my next bill to be on September first.

If that message means that I'm being charged for the first "full" premium month, e.g, the next month, then I'm okay with it. That's good billing / business sense. The wording just doesn't say that.

I'm not a billing expert in the least, but based on the quote you posted and what others have said, I think it means that the pro-rate is for the remaining days in your billing cycle where you've upgraded. So, if your billing cycle is July 31st and you upgraded today, there's still 17 days where you'll be Premium that was part of the previous billing cycle. So they'll tack that on to your total bill when you get billed again on the 31st.

That's what I take it to mean, but if you have more questions feel free to call billing at 1-636-925-3172. They're open until 9pm!
