I have the task of opening boxes in varying conditions after using lmaster sense. I've done this in various settings (dark, fog, average, bright, etc..) and cannot get a rep out of it.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Did you get a scroll from the taskmaster and ensure the conditions where exactly what were required for the box? I'll guess you are, but from your post, it isn't clear if you were just trying to brute force the conditions or not.
You'll also need to be using at least a gold lockpick, not copper or steel.
The initial reps don't have a box difficulty requirement, so there's not too much that can go wrong. If one of those two suggestions doesn't fix the problem, it might be faster to find a friendly rogue in game that can see exactly what you're doing and offer some pointers. Failing that, posting a log snippet of the sense/attempt might bring something to light (no pun intended) that's not coming to mind offhand.
