Hi everybody! (Scroll down to == MECHANICS == if you hate unicorns and kittens)
Let's talk about verbs. I love verbs, you love verbs, we ALL love verbs... Except critters. They would have much better lives without verbs, I think. Anyways, CHANNEL has been a verb for a while that gives you some hard roundtime on casting a spell in exchange for casting a more powerful version of the spell.
Well, with the ELR running amok (Seriously, go check it out!) we realized that there are some spells that have a secondary version, but aren't REALLY more powerful. So what do we do about this? Seriously. Tell me. I'll wait. NO I WON'T I'M TOO EXCITED. Get down to the mechanics section so I can stop typing. Please. Are you still reading this? Wow. I am impressed. How long should I keep this going? You tell me. This is the release note that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends...
== MECHANICS == (These aren't really mechanics, exactly, but why change something that works?)
A new verb, EVOKE, has been released to replace some instances of CHANNEL and set us up the bomb for some new things coming out for the ELR. With that, here's what we've got:
Phase (704), Divine Wrath (335), and Minor Water (903) now use EVOKE instead of CHANNEL for the second version of their spells being cast.

Cool, my only questions involve 335...
Did CHANNELing give phantom endroll bonuses for stance/openhandedness etc. before this change? (I never paid attention to the math, it goes too fast!) If so, is this preserved?
Will SET CHANNELINCANT=ON cause this spell to be evoked automatically, or do I need to EVOKE instead of INCANT now?
Thanks!

I don't believe so.

At the moment you need to use EVOKE instead of INCANT. CHANNELINCANT is not considered by spells that use EVOKE.

To be clear, I would prefer it to act like incant. I just didn't think that was true to reality. |
Yeah, and CHANNELINCANT is a flag that lets you automatically channel when you incant. Maybe there will be an EVOKEINCANT flag? Or a change to EVOKE so it's really like INCANT rather than CAST?
I'd probably be more in favor of the latter, but my only use is 335, so maybe it's better to get the opinions of wizards once all their uses for EVOKE are clear. Though I would guess most wizards would prefer for EVOKE to act like INCANT -- it's the only way to switch between the two versions of a spell without typing an extra line. CHANNELINCANT was never 100% satisfying as a solution for that reason, especially for a spell like 335 with different effects.

Yeah I have a baby sorc and the flag is kinda awkward. The problem is I don't think you can target things with incant. I wrote a small stormfront script and use .inc rather than inc so it checks for a target but the default spell does not. So things like channel <object> wouldn't work right if it was incant-based.

I dpn't like the implication that this might change. CHANNELINCANT took a good 5 years to fix when it was broken. Each time I see a new way of channel being used I wonder if thats going to cause CHANNELINCANT to break, or make it impossible to fix for years the way 118 used channel did. Years of hard RT with no bonus damage from CHANNELINCANT is not something that should be risked again. EVOKE to keep other mechanics away from CHANNEL is great. Keep it that way.
