There are garments that make it look like you aren't wearing armor when you are, but are there any that do the reverse?

e.g. some mithril chainmail on a casual glance but which on close inspection is actually robes embroidered to look like chain.

I've never heard of "fake armor" so to speak, especially not anything that deliberately covers up robes to portray them as armor, but the other armor concealers might work on robes . . . think there were some surcoats out there and other things, if you were trying to get away from the "robed" look.

I think that's what Rath's asking for -- specifically something beyond 'surcoat' or 'tunic' that might look like non-robe armor, even though it's not.

There are some glamour crystals that show knights of varying shades -- If I recall correctly, without any specific armor type reference. Of course, when I 'see' a knight, I automatically think armor.

Perhaps that's an avenue that could be explored?

I haven't tested the spell, but perhaps the monk spell that makes the monk look like some other race / class, etc., could be warped to this end, as well?

I want something that looks like metal armor, but is actually robes.

I looked at someone wearing one of those, and it wouldn't be at all suitable. The messaging is very incongruous, I only ever looked at one person wearing one once, I and still giggle when I remember it.

Just to clarify...

A) You want an illusion of metal armor while wearing robes? I could see an item doing that I guess, but I'm not sure what the reasoning behind it would be other than some kind of deception.

Or...

B) You want actual metal coverings over cloth armor?

A seems like it could have potential, considering the mental/illusion aspects of the monk profession.

B just doesn't make sense to me, since the metal would obviously add protection over the cloth armor and therefore wouldn't be just a way to cover it. It would be actual armor, rendering the robes obsolete as protection. There's no way to rationalize that actual metal over cloth would not provide more protection than the cloth itself. That is why heavier armors like chain and plate are (almost always) made of metal.

While I'm not the official word on what is and isn't for any profession in the game, there are some obvious considerations here that I felt should be mentioned to help guide the conversation in a constructive manner.

maybe robes like "chain patterned cloth of eahnor robes." using the same materials those fancy gowns are made of.

I've been down the cloth-of-(metal) road already with some things I wanted to make at one of my merchant's shops. It didn't fly.

The reasoning behind it is that the majority of metals are just not malleable enough to be woven into something as thin as cloth/fabric and would just break apart due to being too rigid. The best that I could do was small ornaments like runes and buttons. It makes sense to me when I actually think about it, having worked with a variety of metals and alloys in the real world.

Currently the only metals that I've seen as an actual cloth in the game are silver and gold. Copper and veniom have been woven in, but I do not think they can actually be made into complete cloth garments.

The gowns do raise an interesting question though.

I think the OP was looking for something less actual metal, and more "robes that LOOK like chain mail, but are totally just robes". As in, somehow the cloth is woven/bulked up/dyed to look like it were metal but is actually just a high quality optical illusion. Weird idea . . . I guess I can see the RP being that you want to look tough and be wearing armor, but can't due to the mechanics of the Monk.

Interesting request. To the OP what sort of armor would you hope to portray your monk in and why? For the purposes you made the request should all types of fake armor be available or do only some make sense? Adding this functionality into shroud of deception, or possibly shroud+1202 might be one of the better approaches unless the reverse armor concealer was merchant doable.

You mean like stage armor, heavy yarn knitted in a stitch like chain and painted to look metal, but in reality its nothing more than a heavy wool sweater? don't see why not there has been a red wool sweater with halfling-shaped bone buttons that was half plate once.

Most definitely a pink tutu with matching slippers. Or perhaps the pink tutu with saffron hued slippers. Ok do not post while toasted is the new rule.
