Ranger spell ranks. That's it. After 20 spells over your level, outside spells start to do a little more for you in CS terms, but few rangers have that issue.

You inhale deeply upon your pipe, puckering your lips as you send out three rings of smoke before you, then puff out a small vine of smoke that darts right through all three which causes them to disperse in a hazy shroud!

159/43, 161/40, 165/37 all give the maximum possible ranger CS. (+150 from spells)
161/40 gets you there with a spell to spare, but you can't get any more Ranger CS from that last spell.
However, the amount of Ranger CS you give up by moving away from that optimum is pretty small, so its really how high level MnS spells you want to self cast. Even putting all 202 in Ranger would only drop you 4 from the max CS.

The maneuver bonus from 618 is uncapped, as is the effectiveness of spike thorn and call swarm and such, so they're an argument for keeping most of the ranks in ranger spells, and for dumping the extra spells there when it's up in the air.

Do spell knowledge items count as 1 rank of that spell list? (i.e. an Elemental Barrier/430 item counts as 1 Minor Elemental spell rank for a Cleric or Ranger.)
If so... what about spell knowledge items, for a spell that you actually do know? (I can't really see anyone getting one of these very nice items just for an incredibly minor cheesy benefit like that, but hey, you never know.)
Some GM might want to release a "spell knowledge of the 203rd [204th, 205th] spell in CircleX" items, though....

>161/40 is the best balance, imo.
In the majority of the game, you'd be right, but when dealing with 106th-115th level creatures, I've found the extra 10 ranks makes a noticeable difference.

Speaking to you, Ceyrin asks, "Do you spontaneously come back to life when you die?"
Speaking to you, Ceyrin says, "Because I do."
You say, "Yes. I have a condition called Annoraxia.""
