INCANT is the proper verb, however.. something others have said about other spells like this, If you inc a target spell and there is no target and you forget to clear the spell and cast it still hits you.
Example: your hunting in a group,, and incant 616, but someone kills the last creature before you can get the cast off. You still hold the spell as the next one to cast. you move rooms come into a swarm,, prep some other spell such as 140 the prep fails, as you already have 616 ready to cast. You cast and spike yourself. You must remember to either release the spell if no target was available, or make sure you cast at.... as incant will not work a second time as the spell is already prepped.

Yeah. Don't be an Odysia. RELEASE your spells.

<<<So if your hunting with a partner or in a group and the creature is quickly killed and searched before you can react and you INCANT, you spike yourself?>>>
No. Offensive spells will not target yourself or other players, UNLESS you specifically target them. If you want to be sure, just enter a TARGET CLEAR before you start hunting and you should be fine. INCANT is definitely the way to go.

So, basically, rangers get lost and try to kill themselves. I know what to be doing now with my own ranger.
With regard to INCANT, even with a prepped spell, I have difficulty hitting myself with any of the offensive spells in my repertoire. Granted those are 1000's and 400's, perhaps they act differently. Generally, I have to CAST to hit myself with my spells.

If it happens to me, usually its in a swarm and I miss the messaging you have no target.
I go an prep a def. spell and cast, not realizing I already had 616 held over.
However the best 2 solutions have been suggested, use a macro that has release in the first line( you will loose the 16 mana, but you would have to find a critter within 30 seconds either way) or watch what spells you have prepped better.

Do you know you can also use INCANT <spell> for defensive spells? If you have a spell prepped it won't allow you to incant something else ("You already have a different spell readied! You must release it if you wish to cast another!").
INCANT is the best thing since sliced manna bread. Use it, enjoy it! :)

>release in the first line( you will lose the 16 mana
When you RELEASE spells, you only lose 1/4th of the mana it would have cost to cast it. If you were to release 616, you'd just be out four mana.
On the other hand, if you prep a spell and forget to release it or cast it, you're out the full amount when the timer runs out.

Yea I actually did not know incant worked for defensive spells until last year, just habit unfortunately that I usually use stormfront to click an cast for defensive ones. I need to work on that and make some macros. Yes also I knew you only lost 1/4 the mana I was thinking 30 seconds, and losing all when I typed release and loose 1/3 my bad. Either way is better then it first was in III when if you didnt cast you took nerve damage for it.
