Quick Question for the number crunchers is there any significant advantage to double train in survival? If so what are the short and long term advantages?
Thank You.

I don't know the hard numbers but doubling in survival can make foraging and skinning easier during the low levels. After a certain point though you can let that slide to being just 1x and you'd still skin and forage rather well because of the bonuses to 603/604 from ranger ranks. My guess would be to stop doubling once you hit 40 ranks.

I can only speak for the higher levels, but 1x is absolutely sufficient. You last longer than anyone else in harsh weather (602 extends this duration significantly), you never fall on the way to Icemule, you get magnificent skins every time (604 assumed), you don't even need a positive roll to forage (603 assumed), and you get the minimum RT for any Survival related movements (walking through marshes and stuff like that).
I can't see any reason to double it as a ranger. Perhaps, as the other reply suggest, it's beneficial during lower levels, but you should be hard up for TPs at that point, so I would wager that it's not really worth it.
Also, you'll eventually pick up 650 which has the Yierka Aspect to assist you in foraging. Not only does it make you a better forager, it reduces the RT required to forage (to 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 secs per respective forage per room; if you get Haste as well, it's 1 sec across the board).

On a related note...
My ranger's spells are at 640 and 107. Do you think it's worth it to go for 650 now, or put it on hold and take MnS to 120, first? I'm not really hurting for defense at this point...but is 650 worth delaying the MnS list?
Thanks,

Long term, zero because of your spell bonuses. You probably don't even need to be fully 1x at cap to maximise the benefits.
Short term, better skins, and faster foraging. It takes a while to get enough training to cap out the benefits, and if you train 2x, you'll get there sooner rather than later.
>My guess would be to stop doubling once you hit 40 ranks.
I'd say this is the time to review the quality of skins you are getting. If they are all magnificent, you can stop and let it drop back to 1x, if they are mostly magnificent, keep adding a rank a level, and if you haven't got many magnificents, keep doubling. There are some pretty valuable skins at this level, and I suspect you'll find its actually worth doubling to level 30 rather than level 20.

Thank you all for the responses and information. Looks like the best course of action is train 2x until 40 ranks then make further survival training based on skin quality eventually ending up being 1x at cap, which would be sufficient for current game mechanics.
As for spells I had planned on getting 620 then 120 by 40th then back to Ranger spells until 650.

<<<Just a thought, I've had more a need of 625 since you start having to hunt more and more indoors and the DS from 640 then I needed the TD from 120.>>>
I agree, I don't know how I'd get by without 625. And 640 is just amazing. No regrets at all so far.
I'm still debating on 650 vs. 120, but the advice here helps a lot. My compulsion is to go for 650 because I love spells and that's one I've never gotten to play with. But as a practical matter, it seems going for 120 would be the wiser choice. I'll have to cogitate on it a bit more. :)

Re: Survival (spells) on 03/21/2013 08:30 PM CDT
I skipped dodge entirely and went to almost 2x spells for 120 and 640 early.
With mobility ( and regular wiz spellup w/ both blurs) and regular 6x brig I had zero DS and dodging issues and once I got my spells I dropped spell training and focused on bringing back dodge up to 1x. Now I'm almost up to 1x dodge and am considering going up the 600 circle simply for the spell rank bonuses (rather than any particular need for 650).
I did this with several different builds (2hd, Thrown/shield, OHE/Shield, OHE/TWC) with no complaints and no difficulties. I don't do archery, but I doubt that a bow user would suffer any either.

I went to 640, then to 120 but, only because of my training in mana control and it was before 640 became stackable. 650 eats the mana up, the 50 mana for first cast plus if you try an shift 3 or 4 times during a hunt, your looking at that spell using 200 mana in 11 minutes if you have to recast the base spell while hunting. Add a couple sigils, signs or anything else on top of that you need a lot of mana to use 650 every hunt.
