I recently found out group hunting that using only grasp of the grave doesn't yeild fame is this intended?

Did you earn experience? They go hand-and-hand. If you're just using Grasp of the Grave, you're only getting credit for knocking down targets, but if a large number of other characters attacked the target and dealt a decent amount of damage, it could push you off the credit list. Experience (and fame) reward for group killing is based upon propositional thresholds (so you can't expect to deal 1 point of damage, then 10 other characters deal 50 points of damage and still get credit).
