If Simu is paying for ads on the site, will they now put a "vote" button on the GS and DR home pages?
Got to follow through with the investment if you want to get to number 2 on the list!*
*Since the number 1 mud is owned by the person who owns the "Top Mud" site, I don't see that spot ever changing.

They should put an in game NEWS item about it as well as a link to it under the "Welcome to Gemstone IV" thing when you first log in.
Maybe grant a small amount of exp for voting once a day (per account) too, like 100-500 exp or something. Not totally sure how that would work for multiple accounts since I'm pretty sure the votes are based on unique hits, but I'm sure something could be worked out to make it happen.

So I mathed some numbers from the Top Mud Site. People are allowed to vote once every 12 hours. The top site (the owner of Top Muds) had 2150 votes so far for the month. That breaks down to less than 42 people diligently voting everyday of the month.
Among staff and players, I would think Gemstone could muster 43, maaaaaybe 44 just as diligent voters each day?
Just a dream...

>We are hoping to find a new way to add the voting reminder into the daily newsfeed. So there'd be a reminder every 2-4 hours, depending how long the newscast is.
How are the other sites getting votes? Here's a snip from a recent post in the "Arm" forums. (I'm a rogue. I snuck in and out quietly.)
>"I'm playing Achaea when things are slow on Arm and they have this voting button that pops up in the browser (their mud browser is pretty awesome I must admit) every 12 hours to remind me to vote, so I use that reminder to go and vote for Arm instead hahah."
This amounts to a "popup" to remind its users to vote. It certainly works, but that would take away from my gaming experience if it were to be implemented in GS.

I've heard GMs say that it's against the rules for there to be a button on the Front End.
So, I think this is just about getting people who care about GS into the habit. We have at our disposal:
* Frequent reminders from Radcraw over the Prime channel with a link to vote
* I will write one in for Newsby, there'll be a link there over the TownCrier channel
* there's an ;autovote script which has been fixed, and remembers to vote for you
* There's a ;vote script that reminds you to vote with a link in your STORY window, not your lnet window, that you click to vote on
There are banner-links at the wiki, at the PC, and in some player's signatures here on the Forums.
We are holding at 5th, but ... holding. There's a lot of people playing GS who care about it, we really shouldn't have a problem staying in the top 3, surely!

>>Vote is tied to IP, so not MAers.
Not an MAer, but, do I infer correctly that I can vote twice-a-day for each computer I drive?
And, my mechanism for reminding me is to have te link http://www.topmudsites.com/vote-gemstone.html in my favorites list. I suppose If I wanted it more avaialble I could put it in my favorites bar. Makes sense, too, it IS a favorite.

Mr. Clunk,
You can vote once every 12 hours on one IP address. So if you have two computers at home, your vote counts only as one, because they're all on the same network connection.
If you vote at home and at the office (unless your office is at home, of course), they you could vote from 2 computers 2x a day. Bless you if you can remember to vote at work though. I certainly couldn't :)
When you go to Starbucks, you might be able to vote on their wireless with your laptop and/or your mobile, too.
So, there, I hope that helps. Your IP Address needs to count.
And HEY, I had no idea there was a VOTE in GemStone, too! Not that I can get back yet... :(

The algorithm goes by a different name...
As snipped from the forum for Top Mud:
>"...Some of you may know me as "Lasher", the administrator of Aardwolf."
The vote tally resets at the end of the month. If the recent upward voting trend of Gemstone continues, who knows...

If I recall correctly we did take top spot briefly when there was a big push some time ago and shortly thereafter Aardwolf started getting more votes day over day than they had been before.
I don't believe we can take the top spot any more but I think putting Gemstone in the top 5 consistently would be good for the game.

I just checked. My gateway is the same, but the IP address is different. Also, two different computer generations, and two different versions of IP protocol supported.
Makes sens though, dwarves SHOULD get two votes to make up for their height shortage.

Mister Clunk,
I'll get a link into the TownCrier tonight that will show every iteration (2-4 hours, depending on the number of news stories).
It will show as a link in StormFront ... but not on a Mac with Avalon. (The things I'm learning this week....)
One of the GMs says there is a VOTE command with a link. I can't tell on Avalon, though. The url doesn't even show to copy and paste.
So you might want to check that out, too!
