They are a rare type of gem. Copper, silver, gold, and platinum will all show up. They also come in sizes, small, large, ext.

Yeah, they're obviously not a 'gem', but that's the best place to sell them.

Not really sure what their purpose is beyond that. I save all the ones I find, just for kicks.
