[Stronghold, Southwest Skew - 3588]
Shadows huddle into dense pools within the recesses of the corridor, growing thicker as the hallway snakes to the southwest. Within their darkness, a dense covering of contorted runes is visible, skittering across the walls like a spidery army. No breezes intrude here, as if the air current is reluctant to pass the runic display. You also see a stone giant and a roa'ter that is sleeping.
Obvious exits: north, southwest
The roa'ter twitches a little in its sleep.
A stone giant rumbles an incantation.

I was so confused I had to run back to TSC! Any clues on what a roa'ter is doing in the Illoke Stronghold?

lol My first instinct upon being surprised is, "crap1005!" Then of course I realized the roa'ter likely can't touch me, but still...

If two or more of the Illoke mystics (or maybe jarls) get together, they can summon a roa'ter

In this case it would have been mystics. I have never seen them do that, I wish I'd been there to see the summoning. Until then, I will joyfully imagine a suddenly grumpy roa'ter thinking, "Oh for the love of-- You want me to tunnel up WHAT?"

The Iloke in the Bowels can also summon roa'ters, although they do so infrequently and are vastly lower in level than the other critters dwelling there. Still, seeing a roa'ter burrow while you are in the middle of fighting off a swarm of jarls and whatnot is a bit disconcerting. Last night my empath was hunting there; one her main weapons there is sympathy spell. She was most unhappy to discover that roa'ters are immune to this spell. Ok, they are basically mindless moving stomachs, but if they are controllable enough to be summoned, one would think sympathy would work.

You could argue that they are summoned by a spell similar to call familiar, I suppose, in which case they wouldn't need to have much mind, and would be magically bound not to attack their summoners. But in that case, I want to be able to summon a 2 ton familiar who can burrow through solid rock, leap into the air, and crush things!
