Well I don't know how to get by the ring puzzle either, but the one time someone else took me in that way it involved an emerald.
Besides which you have to get through a locked door first. I have only seen it bashed but some say the unlock spell works.
Two very easy ways through the door. A stone heart, skinned from a stone mastiff, or a colored sapphire (green, violet or yellow) pretty much guarantee you can get through the locked doors. Of course, that's a very slight puzzle too, so I won't simple give it away completely here.
As for the puzzle to get down into the bowels, those that know it know it well. I preferred to train my tail off and swim in, never learned how to drop in. I, too, dislike puzzles.
