Forgive me if this has been outlined before; I indeed tried to dig around first before posting... But how on earth can I go about learning animal lore at a reasonable rate fishing? Foraging: 36 Animal Lore: 19 Mech: 208. I can offer more information if that's not enough.

in TF:

I just catch fish over and over. I have a little macro that will reel the pole back in after 5 seconds of no biting (which is the point where it's no longer time efficient to wait). It's really not intended to teach all that well, though. It's harder being Lore primary too.

Just keep fishing and you'll get there. I can easily lock both AL and Foraging (at 75 and 300 ranks) just by catching fish over and over.

Good luck!

Catching fish is the best way to move AL. At your ranks, it should lock after maybe a dozen fish or so.

I_think_ it is the 36 ranks of Foraging that are most affecting your ability to learn Animal Lore from fishing. Once you have more Foraging, and start catching bigger fish, your AL should start running faster. My character, Lore secondary, Survival tertiary, has ranked AL twice since the experience changes, and that is with only a few short playing segments.

Power Perceive:225 44%mind lockPerception:137 05%learning
Foraging:80 79%bewilderingSkinning:103 29%concentrating
Mechanical Lore:152 92%ponderingAnimal Lore:46 04%concentrating

As you can see, from where the mind lock is, this is after a power walk, rather than at the end of a fishing sequence.

I use a script to help reduce the tedium, based off of the script that Ndin was working on, and it fishes, pulls in the line after a short time without a bite and re-casts. On a catch, it skins once, then scrapes to clean or ruined before switching back to casting.

The reason I have it skin once is in order to make sure that I get at least a minimal amount of skinning & mech from the caught fish, since I always succeed at the skin, but can sometimes fail completely (ruined) on the first scrape.

Also note: Because of the recent changes in Experience, skill pools, especially for tert skills, will be draining much quicker than they were before. There is a discussion going on in another part of this forum with a short explanation from Ssra on some of the effects of the changes.

Ah, thanks for the advice, everyone. Turns out I just needed to catch more fish. Recasting after 5-10 seconds seemed to help a lot, too. Now here's my next query: Is there any bait that just tends to catch more fish? Or does it really depend on foraging/type of fish you're going for? If there really is no difference besides live bait/fake bait, would it be safe to just get the live bait that has the most uses per box (like worms or whatever)? I'm using minnows right now for reference.

Look back in this folder, I believe. Someone posted a study they did that found the type of bait didn't really matter as far as the number of fish you'd catch but affected the types you caught.

I started a study to try to determine this, as well as average weight of the fish, but it petered out after I'd caught 500+ fish. I wasn't seeing any discernable patterns. I did find that if you're trying to catch a record-weight fish, your odds are pretty slim. All record fishes were more than 3 standard deviations from the mean (based on my sample size...which would need to be bigger for a definitive number)

I have broken nearly all the fish records in TF using just worms. I always recast after 5 seconds.

Well, I'm not trying to break any records, just work Animal Lore : )
Where I'm at outside of Shard, it has the River 2 collection of fish as categorized on the drtanning site. I just ran out of my minnows, so I think I'll head to Ratha and stock up on the fish eggs since they last 50 uses. By the way, are there any disadvantages to using the biggest hooks and the beefiest line?

Yeah, you are more likely to lose your pole than having the line break if you wind up hooking Moby. Heh.

Moby is one of the big fish out there, only findable on Ratha (I always seem to catch him from the Neh Dock), or while traveling on one of the public boats between Crossing or Haven and Ratha, although I don't recall running into him (her?) on the many boat rides I have taken..

I think I found him last night, though it was on the Skirr... which was moored to the Neh Dock at the time. Oh well, what's one pole? Thanks for all the help.
