I among many elanthians am very happy about this ability that's coming out. I read the list and it's amazing. I can not wait. However there was one thing that was not on the list that i'd desparately like to change. I know that it is not part of the "appearance" part of character creation, but I'd like to change my oodest character's race. She is only my second character ever and I've had her for almost five years now. I love her to death but I hate the fact that she is an Elothean Ranger. I'd much prefer being a Rakash. Is there any way to give the Empaths this ability or even make it a cleric ability and call it "Reincarnation" where people can change their race instead of having to reroll.

From what I've heard no this will never happen because of race bonuses and balance.

I know that race affects many things, but i'm sure that ability scores would change from a racial change. Sort of calculating what you would have had if you were of the new race all along. Such as if you were a gnome first and decided to become a tog (for an extreme example) your intelligence stat would go down and your str stat would go way up. Of course you'd be screwed if you were a mage or something. That would deter everyone from doing so. Maybe put a level restriction on the procedure, etc.

Ayup, it is a hard row to hoe being an Eloth Ranger, unless you focus completely on the stats that are best for them hunting wise. The brains kinda come naturally to them and raising mentals is not that hard, but some tend to forget about that wonderful speed and agility they have. Kinda hard to get hit if you focus on those. Which I'm sad to say I did not when I was younger and was far more concered with everyone telling me to train strength! Up your stamina!. Bah, I finally got some good advice and started training her strong points, of agility, reflex. She dies alot less now..hehe. And now I just want her faster!.

Motarra, Elothean Ranger, and yes a scratch darn near kills me! heh

Maybe a few sacrifices should be made, my primary skill set only has 5 skills, unlike survival with what? 15? And I keep all my stats even with no problems. In fact, I'm actually pretty resillient, and not even that old yet.

The way that this could be handled would be to track the starting number of attribute points that each character gets out of the CM.

When you are reincarnated, you get that same number of starting points, adjusted up or down based on your new race.

Then, pro-rate the TDPs that you have gained from skill against the circle of the character; the more advanced the character is, the more painful the process of the change is and the worse the TDP loss is. However, the TDP loss would never be as bad a starting over AND the character would still retain their circle.

You would be allowed to reapply the remaining TDPs against your new starting attributes, through the standard training process.

A possible mechanic for achieving this would be to require the character to be dead at the time of the process and have an empath shift the dead body to the race. Empaths would only be able to shift to their own race and the farther apart the races are in similarity, the harder the shift. After the shift, it would require that the deceased be raised from the dead by a cleric -- if they depart, they would return in their old body. Once they are alive again, they would start out having no TDPs and just the base attributes, regaining TDPs as their mind acclimates to their new body.

I kind of envision this as the "ultimate" in shifting ability for an empath, with progression involving the ability to shift more and more radical race changes until you get to the point of being able to shift a Gnome to a Gor'tog.

This process would only be able to be done once for a specific character, barring any special circumstances, such as involvement of artifacts, traps, or the immortals.

A variation on this would be the idea of a race-shifting box. This box would change the race of the character to a random race and require a clerical uncurse as well as an empathic shift to return the character to their original race. While under the effects of the box, the character would be stuck at starting attributes (derived as described above) for the new race, until they either were shifted back (at no penalty beyond the cost of the shift, returning to all their original attributes; any tdps spent while in the in-between state would be lost) or had an empath make the shift permanent, causing the same penalties as described above.

I think it would take far, far, far too much development and QC time for someone to work on something like this, and for little purpose. Don't mean to be rude, but if stats and burden were going to affect your playing that much, you should've chose a better race for yourself. Are a couple extra TDPs to spend on a stat point here or there really going to make much difference?

Your character's race is part of who the character is. We're (supposedly) in a role-playing game. I'm an Elothean, because thats part of the character I want to be. How would you be able to justify this in an in character way?

Some quick examples:

1) You are any race other than elven and don't want to die of old age.

2) You are wanted by the law and need to change your appearance enough to no longer be recognized.

3) Your character believes they are a soul of one race trapped in the body of another race.

4) Your character was born to parents of different races and rejects one parent to the extent of wanting to become the same race as the other.

Dont forget...

5) You are really an occular, and in order to maintain your shape-shifting status, you must continually change your race. And get shifted, too. Vorclaf is an Occular!
