Since I didn't go to Simucon, could someone show me exactly what was said on the smithing re-write? I see alot of player posts about how it's gonna be severely downgraded to where barbs/pallies have no advantage, but I don't go for the 'heard it from a friend of a friend of a friend, who heard some guy in the next stall talking about what he heard someone say they heard a GM say' 'cause next thing we'll here is the notorious "forging is now a slap in the face"

If it's being downgraded to where only the top 2% of barbs/pallies can make better than store bought stuff, then welcome to rangerland. If it's being made to where rank per rank a barb makes the same as a <insert guild here>, then yeah, I'll agree that's a crock.

It is being changed so that, while Barbs get a bonus to making weapons and Pallies get a bonus to making armor, the processes will be open to anyone, and, if they work at acquiring enough skill, a non-Barb can eventually make capped weapons, just like a Barb, or capped armor, just like a Pallie. But the Pallie or Barb will reach the cap before the person not of their guild, and it was said that actual weapon/armor ranks won't be quite as important for smithing as they are now, which makes sense since the creation lore only counts 10% toward the total smithing check now.

I believe that Wynder has also posted some actual notes he took at the seminar on his site, the Crossroads of Elanthia. I am working from my feeble memory of the seminar, instead of any written notes.

Ok, my understanding of it is that barbarians will be the only ones who will be able to make the uber-kertig-swords. As far as ordinary steel, everyone will be able to forge with that equally. But since barbarians are the only weapon primary guild, and pallies are the only armor primary guild, they get armor and weapon ranks faster than anybody, so there's a bonus right there.

Also, it will be mostly dependant on the smithing lore as opposed to flat out weapon and armor ranks, which is why most barbarians are saying it will be a slap in the face. But the thing is, it was already dependant on mech...

Steel.

sounds like forging is being made the same as tanning & fletching. A barb can make a capped longbow as well. A barb can make as good of leather armor. Rangers just have an easier time.

(who will gladly donate trophy skins to tanners not of the ranger guild, just might make you do the huntin to get it)

Not without trophy pelts.

So which part are you arguing against this time? The tanning or the arranging? Jent has already said he's going to look into the trophy pelt chances for non-rangers. Several rangers (including myself), have said they'd give you the trophy pelts to do it. Let it go. Arranging is a ranger ability.

Side note: Tarragon, Jent, Raenik, someone! Please put trophy pelts in a shop somewhere to end this thread (or say it will be happening soon).

I personally have no desire to go buy a trophy pelt, I'd rather earn it through skill, even if it is more than a ranger needs.

At any rate, Jent addressed the majority of the concerns.

I don't see a problem with this at all. If you have 200 skinning, then you sure as hell should be able to get a trophy pelt from something every once in a while. I see no problem with this at all and I hope that it will be changed to accomodate other guilds as well. But then figure that you'd need just about 1000 ranks in skinning to get a trophy pelt from a poloh'izh every once in a while, so you won't be making the uber-good tanned armor like Dritz is. The way I see it, if another guild aside from a Ranger has double the skinning skill needed to get a trophy pelt from something 100% of the time, then they should have a chance to get one every time they skin something.
