Now, I have nothing against swimming (it beats drowning), but given half an ounce of ingenuity or more, I would find a log and ride it over the river, lake, etc., rather than merely swim. And having heard the Langen elf tell of his fine boat, it would eventually occur to me to make something even more comfortable (and drier) than a log. So.....
Could we PLEASE have small boats, canoes, rafts, etc. that we can rent, buy, carry, etc. to go fishing and traveling in. Such craft would of course require some skill in handling, lest we overturn and have to swim anyway or get dragged to who knows where by the currents and have to hike back towing the boat. The opportunity to obtain skill in small boat handling could be limited to those who have first obtained a modest amount of swimming (say 50 ranks), perhaps giving some value to the effort in that skill that non-rangers may put into it. Alternatively, perhaps small boat handling is not a separate skill but instead requires a measure of agility and strength and teaches mech lore?

>>While I didn't attend the seminar at SimuCon on boats, they are supposed to be in development for player ownership.
>>Maybe someone who DID attend that seminar, and remembers it ;), can give you the full scoop.
I didn't go, but I vaguely remember the system was focused on ships and prices were in the 100,000 plat and up range.
I would very much like to see small boats and canoes be available in DR.
Would be neat to be able to constract and repair vessels like canoes and kayacks, since they can be made from components that are readily available to our characters, such as hides, branches, and the like.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a steadfast refusal on the part of the design team to allow us means to bypasss the major transportation barriers in the game (the gash, lake gwenalion, etc.) through any means other than a moon gate, so I have my doubts that any of these would be as useful as we'd like as players.
I'd rather see three tiers of transportation across these barriers, instead of the two that we currently have:
1. Moon Mages (quickest, but requires player availability)
2. Trailmarkers and alternate modes (quicker than the barge or gondola, but not as quick as a moon gate and requires significant skill to take more than yourself)
3. Barge/gondola (slowest, but always available and cheap/free)

>Ahhhhh. I just had fond memories of when we had those wonderful, wonderful, lovely, beautiful Shards that allow us to POOF to places.
>Those things scared the bujeezus outta me when I rubbed one my first day in DR.
I took a break from DR during the web transfer (no credit card at the time) and when I came back, those Shards were live.
Man. I rubbed one and found myself on Aesry, I think. I really had no idea where I was or how to get around over there. I teleported to a bunch of other places that I'd never seen before, died somewhere remote, and eventually signed off, extremely frazzled.
Those shards were a lot of fun. I'm not too disappointed that they're gone, though.

I remember people doing that. One guy dumped us off on Ratha somewhere, and it took me three hours to find a shard to get myself back.
Scared the wits out of me. I couldn't find a map anywhere, and I "knew" the islands were crawling with critters in town that would kill me.
Makes me happy to think of this, now that I run the other way when someone mentions courage.

<<If we were to start crafting our own boats or kayaks, how do you see this done?>>
Well, takinga a nudge from warrior mage familiar carving, I would suggest the ability to chop down trees with a hatchet.
CHOP OAK TREE WITH AXE
After the tree is felled, you then SCRAPE BARK WITH <insert tool>. Maybe a wood shaper.
Once the "log" has been chopped and scraped clean it's ready for carving. This is when a new tool can be introduced. Similar to a wood shaper, but larger and will actually chop to create the inner structure of the log.
Strength, stamina and lore will help determine how fast you can carve this log. Then after all that (time consuming), is to smooth the interior. This can be done by using some sort of pounding stone or sandpaper type object that would shape the boat.
Skills would determine how the boat is constructred (well, skillfull ect.).
Lastly is the sealing. Some sort of tarish substance can either be purchased or made (more alchemy folks). This substance would be rubbed and polished onto the boat. Then the boat must dry. If it's dragged to the water too soon, it can sink.
Other elements such as carving a name on the boat or designs or other such features such a carved wooded dragon heads or griffins on the head of the boat. Or perhaps create shops that cater to creating these designs on boats.
After you have a seaworthy craft, I can see the carving of oars using branches. The boats can then be "dragged" if you have the strength to water. If you don't have the strength, you'll need either a friend to help or purchase some sort of animal (see traders) to help cart it to water. Any swimming area would do. This would give folks the ability to cross the river for example in Haven or practice a new skill such as rowing or "somethingorother".
Docks can be made where you can store your kayak or boat for a fee. Similar to how stables are for horses or how vaults are.
I would also like to see the option of using the boats to attempt to cross vast seas. For example, the boat ride to Crossing to Leth would be relatively easy. But crom Crossing to Aesry let's say would take hours with the threat of pirates or storms on the way.
A knew "seaman" skill could be used to determine roundtimes on rowing and how long it would actually take to canoe to the Islands. Later, sails can be imlemented (alla tanning or such) to make the boat go faster.
Other dangers I would like to see could be sea serpents, sharks or even River Boas attempting to get at ya.
Boats could be damaged prone, which you can either have it fixed yourself or take it to a boat fixing shop (for a considerable price), or patch it yourself if you have enough woodworking skill.
I realize ships will be coming, but this could be a smaller version of it.
Just a few thoughts tossing around
