I have a question on how well certain origami instructions teach.
Say you can fold a ship pattern perfectly, and still get experience from it. You make no mistakes whatsoever in completing this shape. It just takes more paper to mind lock mech lore from this shape.
Say, also, that you can fold a gryphon pattern, but not even close to perfectly. You get a lot more experience for completing this shape, per paper, than for completing a ship, but it also takes a LOT longer.
My question is: Is it faster to mind lock mech lore from the ship, or from the gryphon? (If you didn't care about how many pieces of paper you were using, etc.)
What'd be the optimum shape to fold?

That's a good question, one that has occured to me as well. The way I phrase it is, when is the best time to upgrade your instructions to the next one on the list?
A little experimenting should give the answer. Best thing I can suggest is, check out the origami calculator, get two or three sets of instructions in your skill range, and a stopwatch. Then time how long it takes to mindlock with each.

Don't really need the stopwatch, since all folds take the same amount of time regardless of difficulty. Just set a script to count the folds, count them manually while doing it, or look over your logs and count the folds required to get to mind lock status.

Do you learn from fubar-ed folds? (messes with paper but doesn't accomplish much or whatever the msging is) For some reason I always figured you didn't... Never really bothered to check though, heh.

From my experience, I only learn from completed folds. I use Veii's origami calculator (www.drveii.com), and I don't switch patterns until I can "probably" fold it. In some cases this is probably too soon, but I get bored folding the same stuff over and over, so I'm usually in a big hurry to switch patterns.

From what I've seen, depends on your agility.
The teaching you'll get from a given instruction is going to be the skill level of that instruction Vs. your BASE mech lore ranks. If you have a lot of agility, so that you're capable of folding an instruction WAY above your base mech lore's ability, you may as well just do an "eyes closed" one. You don't get experience (or, at the very least, no appreciable experience) from a failed fold, and since you're so far beyond your base mech skill, you'll get very good experience despite the fact that the instruction you're folding is trivial for you.

I don't see any folding whatsoever! Same with juggling, climbing, and foraging! The Northeast gate is so much more quiet with squelches.

I rarely squealch... I'm too afraid I'll miss something important... or that I'll accidentally squealch a name by mistake and one of these days I'll be standing in the middle of town wondering what the heck is beating the crap out of me

Heh, yeah....I recently squelched "The scarecrow" so that I could tone down the screen scroll in the Arthe Dale Garden, I found out that there's an extra line break before that line...so I kept getting:
>
>
every once in a while....freaked me out cos I didn't know what went there, but eventually figured it out.
And if I ever get to the point where I squelch names or something, I'll probably just highlight their name black so I don't see it, but never really had to come across that.

Yep. I was folding something that marked as "No bets" on Veii's calculator, and did like 6 unsuccessful folds in a row, and managed to get from learning to thoughtful. So I assume that you do learn from unsuccessful folds, but it's so little experience it's negligible.

hrmm...I've been thinkin about this lately, do you have to have a primer to fold the paper? or just instructions? Or can someone explain how this folding paper thing works?
