With 100 swimming and 100 climbing, what can I do to make my life in Elanthia a litte easier as far as travel goes. I know I can't bypass the gondola. But can I swim to Riverhaven from the Crossing? Or Throne City from Riverhaven? How about to Leth from Crossing? I know 100 skill is really low in the scheme of things (I still can't even climb the crossing embrasures) but I thought maybe I could do some other stuff with it. Thanks!

Maybe on this one. Might as well give it a try, since it's completely safe, and if you can't, you just get dragged back to the shore.

You should be able to swim the Faldesu with 100 swimming, might be take you a few tries to get around the rock in the middle, but you should make it. With a little bit more swimming you should be able to take the Rossman's shortcut from Haven.

With 100 swimming, you can make it, but any burden you have will be very hindering. If you're having trouble, try reducing your burden, and potentially removing armor (I'm not sure if that helps, though it would add to your burden if you're stowing it).

Strength boost if you have it. And swimming spell obviously if those are a possibility.

If you're a caster, at just under 100 I was able to start making it with refresh as an empath. On another character I found ease burden made it easier even with no burden when I started going from Crossing to Riverhaven at 106. Not sure why, it just seemed to help. I didn't struggle against the current as often.

You're very close (if not already ready) to swim between Crossing/Haven. Go ahead and try it, at the worst you fail and eventually get swept back to shore and climb out. Another 30-50 ranks and you should also be able to swim to Rossman's (which also opens up the no skill-check ropebridge to Theren and allows you to bypass the barge between Haven/Lang)

You are a long ways off from swimming the Crossing/Leth river, I think maybe 350 ranks on that? Be careful attempting this river before you're ready, because you will just be stuck there unable to move and unable to die until someone fishes you out

I could do that with ~250, albeit slowly.

At about 400 (less if you're a Ranger) is when I felt it was worth it to swim between Crossing and Leth. If you're failing every third swim attempt and getting 14 seconds per attempt you're not saving much time over the ferry.

one thing about the skill combine is that if you've overtrained climbing and neglected swimming, you'll be able to swim the selgotha easily.

For instance, my thief <who already can get past the selgotha the "other" way> can easily make it with 508 climb/167 swim which combines as 508 athletics.

However, my necro, which has juat as many ranks if you add them pre-combine, except split differently <roughly 320 climb, 300 swim> cannot. Which sort of sucks for my necro. :-(. Even though right now, I can run back and forth from rossmans much quicker with my necro than my thief.

If you go by Kraelysts travel scripts the general level for swimming to riverhaven is about 120 ranks. I find it depends also on type of armor you wear, <same character wearing plate even without encumbrance has rougher time than when wearing leather> encumbrance as well <that part is build into the script> , and strength <which sad to say, isn't built into the script.
I've already build into the script the appropriate "matches" for 3.0 <so anytime it matches for climb /and /or swimming, I also set a match to athletics> so i'm ready to go when the skills transition.

One incentive to go though is to fight river sprites.

with 330 swimming, bonus and capped CAIS i still get an avg rt of 15 sec. per room swimming from crossing to leth. and about 20% of the time the current drags me away.

I was able to swim the river from Crossing/Leth with a tad more than 250 the first time. 260? That was with a swimming and strength spells. It took a bit as I kept getting dragged with a 14 second rt though.

I tried the Crossing to Haven with 102, but it didn't work out so well. I took off all my armor and anything heavy and gave it a go, but to no avail. I did make it to the rock in the middle, which I'm damn proud of, but couldn't quite make it around.

The trouble was that it was all a maze. It was hard enough to find the rock. My fatigue went down to nil, so I berserked to keep it up. Even then I couldn't quite make it. I did notice that the whole time I was swimming with a bundling rope (empty, no skins) in my right hand. Not too sure how much that had to do with it. I'll try again in 15 ranks or so. Thanks everyone.

I know so far with 113 I can only get to the rock as well (with no burden) and not any further. I believe it is closer to 120 ranks before you can get all the way across. It is great for training in this range though.

Strength is an important factor for swimming. I believe that wearing armor is also a factor. I am not sure if armor training reduces this penalty, nor am I sure if armor type is factored into the equation.

In my unofficial tests, it was more beneficial to stow my armor and cast Ease Burden than to keep the armor on and deal with the armor penalty.

just a guess with the armor thing, but it could be the maneuvering hinderance that is kicking in to prevent a swimming attempt even though there is no burden.

<<The trouble was that it was all a maze>>

NW/N/NE all lead one room towards Haven. If Bob, Joe and Steve start in the same room and head in the three different northerly directions, they will end up in the same room.
SW/S/SE all lead one room towards Crossing, same rules as the Northerly directions.

If memory serves, East leads one room closer to shore. Whether that's North or South depends on if you're North or South of the boulder.
I don't recall where the West direction takes you.

It looks like swimming west will put in the same room you came from unless you're n/s of the boulder, and then it'll put you west of the boulder.
