Yah, sure, you betcha.
Of course, from my point of view, that is certainly one of our (WMs) TM spells, like Aether Lance or Frost Scythe (in the forming stage).

Well, I was originally going to answer "Soon." in a joking sort of way, but then I realized/remembered that Talian was the GM who took over the Spellbook Merchant (see http://www.play.net/forums/messages.asp?forum=20&category=4&topic=39&message=1357), but then I also recalled that Talian just retired as a GM, so the current answer would seem to tend toward "Not until Solomon gets another GM to take over the ill-fated position as the owner of this system."

Heyos,
With Talian's departure, Spellbooks now fall to me. Given the current state of things, there's about half a zillion things on my plate to do -- so I'm not going to b-s you all around and even say soon. We'll work on getting the merchant back out there as soon as is humanly possible.

Not to be beating on a dead horse...but what is it exactly that is keeping the merchant from returning? Is there something with the code that it can't just be dropped back in Zoluren? Is it being expanded upon or something? I just don't understand what needs done to it in order for it to re-open. It seemed pretty well coded out last time it was here.

Any of those things that are on your oh-so-full plate which come before spellbooks have to do with actually making scholarship accessable to everyone without needing five spellbooks?

I have a spellbook but I let a friend borrow it and I never use it I didn't even use it for scholarship to begin with. I came up with the coin to get it before and worked my fingers pretty hard to do so. I think if they just plop the merchant out because there is a high demand it will cheapen what it means. I'd like to see the merchant again someday but I'd like lots of NEW options so the people that got them before would want to drop even more plats to buy a new one and those of us who got spellbooks because they just fit our roleplay can keep the old ones and not have that particular look/setup cheapened like what happened with cleric prayer badges. They used to be a status symbol of either age or coin now they just mean you found someone who stockpiled.

Excuse me? I've been working very hard in order to save up money. I was...oh, like 2nd circle when they were out before and had only been around for a short time. So, I don't even really see how I could have saved up during that time (although I most certainly tried.) I'm happy that you were able to get one, but I wouldn't consider them being cheapened by the fact that more people have now had time to save for one.

Well,
It's not exactly as easy as just dropping the merchant back down. For one, I dunno if Skralthaen or Talian did any changing in the code which still needs QCed. For two, I've still gotta finish updating them for DR2 (they don't work all the way in DR2 yet). Sooooo, its on the list, but I've got several much higher priority things that need accomplished first.

Re: Spell book merch on 04/29/2004 12:11 PM CDT
Valdrik,
Just as a suggestion to help appease the masses, wouldn't it be possible to find a version of the merchant you know to be the same code as was used when last open, with no changes? If so, then why not open up the shop for a brief time while still on the current engine, where you know it works, and just close it up when it comes time to switch engines?
That would give people a chance to do their shopping (especially if the repairs portion is available, for those who have spellbooks and need repairs) and would likely make it a heck of a lot easier for people to wait for the "new and improved" updated and DR2-ready version.
If not, then consider this a suggestion for DR Dev in general: it would seem silly to me that there isn't somewhere GM's can archive things like this for easy retrieval while it's being worked on so they can always retrieve a "clean original" if needed. I know whenever I work on scripts for DR or JScript code for my websites, I never just start fiddling with the code I know already works without saving a copy of the version I had already been using that is known to work fine. That's working without a safety net and although the rush might be fantastic, Murphy's Law says it can only doom me to disaster eventually. :-/

Better to do it right than not, so long as it gets done.
;)
Would be nice to be able to hire someone to repair the spellbooks already in existance, also.

Its just nice to know someones got it in mind, thanks valdrik...
Couple of suggestions for later on:
-Would be nice if you could incorporate parts of the textbook system into spellbooks (inserts and such)
-Have an exchange for credit guy. You sell your spellbook back to the merchant for like 70% of its value and get a ticket to put toward the purchase of a new one. (so we can upgrade and change styles)
-Was already said, but place a repair guy in some library someplace
-Dun forget to include necromancer spellbooks in a hidden room somewheres

doesnt make sense. spellbooks already cost way too much and there is no sane reason to keep them rare at all.... anyone that knows magic in the history of any RP type game normally had a spellbook of some sort. they should just be sold at a shop specific to each guild and help learn scholarship.

When they were released it was flat out stated that they were going to be semi-rarish.
>anyone that knows magic in the history of any RP type game normally had a spellbook of some sort.
This is not those games.
>they should just be sold at a shop specific to each guild and help learn scholarship.
If learning scholarship is the real push for spellbooks then one should lobby for better ways to learn scholarship
without a spellbook.
