One of the things that I have appreciated about DR from the very beginning (before I was a GM) is its deversity and variance.

When I was a player in GS3, there was one set of armor everyone wore. That was the class 4 leathers...it didn't matter what profession you were, it didn't matter what your skill set was, it didn't matter what critter you were fighting, it didn't matter what weapon the opponent was using. Class 4 leathers were the best...they offered the most protection for the least amount of hinderance, and the least amount of weight.

From the first day I stepped into DR, it was clear to me that was not the clase here.

We have a tendancy as humans to look for that "golden key"...and so as a result, here in this game, we keep looking for that perfect armor or weapon that is the answer all the way around. It's not going to be found here. Simply using the publically known aspects of armor such as henderance, weight and protection types, there is no clear "best" armor overall for any particular profession or even race. For example, a number of players think that there is a particular set of full leathers that is the "holy grail" of armors...I can guarantee you they are paying the price for that assumption.

You will be better served to wear leather breastplate against one creature, full leathers against another, and maybe a coat against yet another. And don't for a minute think that it escaped us on staff, that in midevil times, even the knights wore leather some times, work chain others, and plate others. Yes, there are penalties for wearing chain...there are penalties for wearing plate...there are also significant advantages. You particualar character may not realize the full potential of those armors not "native" to your guild, but you are also short-changing your character if you do not learn to employ those other armor classes in the right situations.

What I'm saying is, yes, there are times when even light chain is a better answer for the given challenge than leathers, heavy chain, or plate...but we all have a tendancy to choose that one armor type, work it for it is worth, and think we've done ourselves good. That is not necessarily the case.
