Greetings everybody,
I would like to host a tournament down in SCC in the near future but I need input from everybody. That includes people who have never tournied before and have no idea how it works. What would be some incentives that would catch your eye and strongly encourage you to come participate in a major tournament? I am not talking a huge multi-teamed tournament of 3 players per team or anything to that effect, but rather joining major tournaments that involve two massive teams that fight in the arena. I?ve heard several reasons why a lot of people would not even want to participate (too small to compete with the regular tournament people, no healing, rezzes, out of the way, etc). I would love to see the small and the big fight side by side in some massive bouts. Normally the bigger guys don?t even attack the younger guys unless they happen to be one of the last ones standing and try to take out the bigger threats first anyways. So what would it take to have you change you mind realistically? What would add some spark and flavor that would snag your interest? Remember this most likely would not be GM involved (thought I would greatly appreciate any help I could get) so keep it realistic but I am very interested to hear what you all have to say. Thanks everybody.
Sincerely,
Player of Pormithius

I would basically come straight out and say that nobody under 50th circle should even consider joining the regular cemetary tournies. You may be able to affect some people, but you're very likely to simply be, as stated, cannon fodder. It doesn't matter how many 30th circle warrior mages band together, they'll never take out Edgee.
Below 50th circle the manner of tourneys change; a circle bracket system is inappropriate because people can keep their circle artificially low, and the tourney environment changes - people have lower stats, lower skills, and a five circle difference becomes much more noticable due to relative sizes.
I'll have to ponder a bit more on a method to more fairly match up lower circle people. It's not easy.
Orpheus: "You've been powering this machine with a forsaken child?"
Venture: "What? It's not like I used the whole thing."

>a circle bracket system is inappropriate because people can keep their circle artificially low
This happens at all levels, except the very top.
>It doesn't matter how many 30th circle warrior mages band together, they'll never take out Edgee.
This is the one huge difference between DR and alot of PvP enabled games. DR is purely skill based combat, so it takes skill to defeat/harm opposing skill. In WoW, for example, a noob can (not easily) defeat a lvl 60 because of the simple fact that they can take HP, even if its only 10 HP at a time.
I have no opinion on which model is better.
>It's not easy.
As long as all skills in all skillsets are available for TDP access (which is the driving factor in multi-armor, multi-weapon training in the first place) .. There will always be dominant characters in any circle bracket.
Secondly, if the is no reason to circle for additional skills, abilities, cool stuff, other than higher circle, why not uber-backtrain/tdp-farm and dominate the kaith kirm style events? Very few of us are ever going to get to the top, might as well lay down the smack on the middle.
We will likely never have restricted TDP skills, or forced circling (however with bit-exp there is a chance), so the issues will not be contained.
Reporting is futile, you will be assimilated.

>If you never ask the guildleader about training ...
I didn't mean to imply it would or should happen. I don't beleive the current EXP system will be changed, nor do I beleive there will ever be forced circling; it was just an observation that bit-based would offer an opportunity to change it.

I started competing in the crossing tourneys before I was 60th. I'm only 73rd now. Are there people I can't touch? Sure. Any of the big barbarians (Lakus, Edgee, etc) are all but invulnerable to me, but anyone else is fair game.

Thanks so far for input, but nobody has really hit the nail on what I'm looking for. I'm aware of the issue with circles and little guys getting squished. What I am looking for is motivating factors that would be enough to get ALOT more people involved. Would throwing in a 1,000 plat purse to the winner do? Even if that's 50 on 50 in a massive Arena fight, that's 20 plat your 50th circle guy just made if your team won in less than an hour and all you had to do was show up and try to kill somebody on the other team..........or something to that extent. Lets get creative but realistic.

P.S. With reference to the younger guys getting killed.....of course that's going to happen but normally the big guys don't pick on the younger ones, especially the really young ones until it's a last man standing situation, in which case Edgee gets humbled by the commoner every time!

These days we generally do the under 80/over 80 tourneys in the cemetery. Keeps the people from trying to hit Enef when they're only 75th or trying to dodge a shot from Lakus at 60th circle.
I still fight in the over 80th tournies at just over 65th, but the under 80 tournies are where you can feel like you really contribute, and you can start those at around 50th or so. Have to be a well trained 50th, but 52nd is when I started.

Last couple cem tourneys didn't have more than a single round. The time taken for people to get healed and raised is too long - I was disappointed last week when not enough people showed up as plans were to test out using the SCC arena for tourneys (providing transport to the arena via moongate from crossingfor convenience). The lack of dying will certainly make things go faster as people take more risks, and also multiple rounds is more likely due to a lack of dying.

Yep, I'm one of those little barbarians that doesn't bother showing up, mostly because I'm just waking up and not able to run from Langenfirth to Crossing. The only 'to the death' event I participated matched me with someone about 20 circles higher; the fella even let me swing a couple times before he killed me with two blows (yes, I didn't die in the challenge but wasn't attended to in time). This, in my book, isn't 'fun', as I have to spend at least another hour learning my skills again.
The purses/prizes are a great touch and I think the recent "pick up" tourneys that Maulem and other arranged are great. Don't really think that money and prizes are the mitigating factor for the higher cirlce folks, but are a boon for those of small circle; 10 platinums can easily buy or at least get you that much closer to that LC shirt.
As for the observation of people keeping their circles artifically low, I'll throw in my 2 kronar. That's simply the way I train now, since all the changes to combat (and probable future changes) and I want to be balanced and prepared for any contingency. Plus, should a special event arise (i.e.; Droughtman's) where you're handed a spear, some LP greaves and a leather breastplate, I'll be ready. Probably won't be a winner in my division, but I'll at least be a worthy combatant and bring no dishonor to Biter Clan.
However the organizers decided to handle it, it'll be as fair as possible and those that compete or choose not to for various reasons don't have to feel obligated. Frankly, I don't feel like being a meatsack or punching bag for someone.
