I agree, though I'm fairly certain some, but not all, brawling moves are broken. Grapple and tackle come to mind immediately. However, there are brawling combinations that train extremely well, and still allow you to kill the critter you're brawling with.
What JLo said is pretty much spot on.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It actually has nothing to do with traning technique. Mord has no problem learning brawling at all. But when I need a pelt to go get a favor with and the bloody wolves keep retreating cause they are scared of my wee little carving knife (more likely its the avenger that scares them). Grapple sure would be handy so they don't run away. I don't want to have to around begging for a pelt when I'm perfectly capable of getting myself, IF I could just get my hands on them. I could swear not long ago I had no problem grappling them, now.... nope, not a fat chance in ....
Now I could try to manipulate them.... oh wait, nope THATs rather broken too, and at the rate they run way instead of attacking other wolves.... well so much for that thought.

I knew what you meant, I was just throwing other broken brawling things into the mix.
I thought you could just sleep them, but I guess that might not work if they have to face you for your avenger to attack them.

Re: Can we PLEASE get Brawling fixed? on 11/23/2008 11:44 PM CST
Trust me on this, the issue here has nothing to do with stats or skill but with the fact that Brawling is flat out broken. I've no problem grappling and pinning small peccaries or swamp trolls or fendryads, and even do well trying to grapple bristle peccs. There is NO WAY I should not be able to grapple or tackle a blood wolf or a marauder, other then because BRAWLING IS BROKEN.
Could I sleep them? Sure, but I shouldn't have to take 15-20 seconds to cast NB, on something I should just be able to pin quickly and easily. That and its beside the point, brawling is busted and would be nice to see it fixed.
So I'm sticking with my original request, please please please give Brawling a bit of love and fix it?

Can we get any sort of timeline on this, or update on if its even a current project? If its way behind this thing, the other thing, and some other thing that'll take years, thats ok, but.. can we know?

Brawling EXP/combo on 01/16/2009 07:25 AM CST
Having gone though all the previous posts, it would appear that all the combat aspects (punch/kick/slap so forth) are not working at the moment and that the best way to learn brawling is the non-combat moves (bob/weave/circle). I am currently using this little combo to try and get my brawling moving.
Top:
put circle
waitfor Roundtime
pause
put weave
waitfor Roundtime
pause
put bob
waitfor Roundtime
pause
goto Top
However, it rarely gets above thoughtful. Anyone have any better combos to try and get this thing moving or is brawling just FUBAR at the moment? If it is just busted can a GM maybe give a comment on roughly where it stands on the priority list?

I've been using circle/bob/weave for the last ~215 ranks. A lot of people just bob over and over and over.
Is this a new character? Or a really skilled one? New characters have trouble getting into the brawling "groove," but it picks up pretty nicely after a while.
If it's a newer character, pick up a parry stick to parry with, as you'll learn some brawling from parrying. Pick up brawling weapons to increase damage from actual brawling attacks. And circle/bob/weave whenever you're just training defenses or magic or whatever.
It should get there eventually.

Other possible combos (the ones I use):
punch/elbow/kick/slice, repeat
gouge/slap/claw/elbow, repeat
I have no problem at all locking brawling with these combos, with very disparate characters.

Nothing special. Use standard brawling combo, when in moonskin add 'bite' to the start or end, or both :). When not in moonskin, 'bite' is a grapple manuever meaning you have to have the person in your arms. When not in moonskin, its a melee manuever. Havnt really tested anything beyond that.

Ok guys. Id brawling really meant to be so difficult to learn? I'm hunting at my level in crossing goblins. I have 28 in brawling. I have been in there 45 minutes as of this moment and brawling has got to thoughtful a few times then pulses back to learning. I did this for an hour earlier.
What do I need to do to get brawling moving? I'm a barbarian and it is my secondary weapon of choice. This is my script I run:
#Brawl
put STANCE SET 100 80 0 100
put gouge
pause 5
put slap
pause 4
put circle
pause 5
put bob
pause 5
put weave
pause 5
rawr:
pause 1
put sk brawling
put kick
pause 5
put slice
pause 4
put punch
pause 4
put elbow
pause 4
put slam
pause 4
put skin gob
pause 3
put bund
put search gob
pause 1
put get co co
put get bron co
pause 1
put search hog
goto rawr
When I'm brawling I have a dagger in hand just to make skinning easier. Do I need to be brawling empty handed or something?

I tried non damaging moves Rahl. Not just bob alone, I did the circle bob weave shuffle forever. Then I read in this particular thread line that at lower levels damaging moves are far superior to dancing moves for brawling.
I just don't understand why a skill needs to be so tedious to train at low levels. I could understand it being a pain near the cap but not on a brand new toon.
I guess I'll try bobbing spam and see what happens.
Thanks.

I totally wish "Bobbing for Spam" were a real thing. I believe I will go to the store to order the implements necessary to make that happen.

if you have enough in a regular weapon, you can learn brawling quite easily dancing with critters. I have no problem locking it on any of my family at different levels of skill.

Re: Brawling EXP/combo on 07/04/2009 10:50 PM CDT
Remember that as of now, experience is directly related to damage (with exceptions). The problem is that brawling damage is directly related to two things, stats, and armor/brawling weapons.
Make sure to use the moves that coincide with your good stats (assuming you have any), stay away from grappling of any sort, and if you're still having problems, try to get ahold of a set of brawling gear.
Unfortunately, this is likely to be a problem you'll meet again in two, three hundred ranks. Compared to fighting with a weapon, it comes up short many times.

Thanks Raist. My strength is 20 at lvl 7. I think thats good, for goblin hunting anyway. I use elanthipedias brawling info and most of my damaging maneuvers are based off of strength.
I finally got it to concentrating but I really don't know if it's worth the effort. I've been there for nearly 2hrs.

Uhh...well when I brawl I have spiked knuckles and an elbow spike...
Combo is gouge, claw, elbow, shove, punch. or gouge, claw, elbow, punch, slam.
Locked me up since I started in rats, and still does me good in leucros. Then again my character is Prydaen, I have claws. Though there are claws to be found somewhere to use as brawling gear, too. Also umm Boar Clan sells some brawling gear if you're willing to make the hike. And I know a few Traders sell brawling gear for a plat a piece, I go to the bazaar tents often and see brawling gear all over the place.
Hope that helps =D

Re: Brawling EXP/combo on 07/05/2009 02:20 AM CDT
Hrm. The combo is good. I use the same one without the circle, bob, or weave at the beginning. I wonder if the dagger in your hand is messing you up. Are you holding that dagger in your right hand? If so, the slice you will try to slice with that dagger instread of your fist, but I wouldn't think it would impact learning all that much. Assuming right handed use, how badly is slicing with a jabber affecting your balance/position? You are also nearing (but have by no means reached) the upper end of wher egoblins will teach you. Buy 30-35 ranks I had moved on to eels with all three of the Barbs I have played. At goblin levels, again, I wouldn't think it would matter as much, but could poor mentals be holding you back? Are you hitting poorly due to excessively low agility perhaps. I'm just sort of brainstorming possible issues here. Feel free to chime in anyone.

This. My top Prime char learns brawling while using her top weapon just fine, and for kicks sometimes will go punch out a few eidilon steeds just for kicks. And my top Plat character has her brawling as very nearly equal to her ME.
Not to mention throwing in a few none-damaging brawling moves gives the added bonus of letting my character 'rest' before going back in to fight.
