Heavy Chain and hiding on 11/30/2007 07:04 AM CST

I'm a barbarian who chose to train heavy chain armor as a second armor skill along with leather when these armor changes happened 4 or 5 years back. Now to my dismay I read that HC and leather don't really go well together as far as hiding goes when they are mixed. My real question is if as I start to get a more considerable amount of skill in the HC (I'm about 115 ranks at circle 58 now) will I be able to hide even semi-effectively in an all-HC suit of armor? Or is a HC chain wearer pretty much commiting himself to not hide and stalk?

I should note that I don't PVP and am not even "that" crazy of a hider. I just like to be able to train the hide/stalk skills while I use a crossbow for the most part and also use hide/stalk for a couple of my survival skills.

Also I'd like to ask if I was wearing say all HC and then wore a leather cowl would my hiding actually be worse off than an all-HC suite? I notice now that I can hide and stalk a peccary very effectively wearing all leather but if I just put on chain gloves (let alone a chain hat also) I fail to hide about 9 out of 10 times.... almost a perfect reversal from straight leather. This strikes me as completely assanine but then again...who am I to question these matters ::grins::

Any info/opinions would be appreciated. And for gods sakes please don't tell me to ditch HC and backtrain LC LOL! I think I'll put a pistol in my mouth if I have to go through all that again just to get back to where I am now with HC.

I can't speak 100% for HC, but with LC I can hide and stalk effectively.

LC roar helm (fairly hindering), LC hauberk (mod hindering), LC gloves (inisg hindering), holding a large shield (low hindering).

176 hiding
162 stalking
142 LC

Fighting hatchlings I can hide about 19 out of 20 tries at pole. I'm survival secondary so I can't hide at melee. I retreat to pole, hide, stalk, advance, attack left.

I started off wearing all leather (a bit over 150 ranks right now), then switched to Leather body with LC accessories, then decided to just jump to full LC for the protection benefits. I did initially notice a big difference with stealth hinderance, but it seems to have decreased post-115 ranks or so. HC will have higher stealth hinderance than LC and Leather, so you may want to contemplate throwing in some LC accessories to get your skill up a bit higher and then gradually phasing out HC.

Unless you have hiding and stalking much higher for your circle than normal you can probably discount hiding at melee.

However, I use an LC/HC/Leather mix and can hide quite effectively against multiple enemies.

My hiding and stalking is good but not great. A couple points of interest:

A) I don't notice any difference between a Leather/HC mix and a Leather/LC mix.

B) The chain penalty is noticable but able to be overcome with modest effort. FYI, I would recommend leather on the body and chain accessories, as chain on the body seems to have a much bigger penalty.

C) I would not recommend stacking hiding penalties. If you're going to be hiding often, try to keep your limbs clean (eat yelith root, cebi root, hisan salve, and jadice flower) and try to keep your burden light. I notice another reduction in hiding effectiveness with anything above a light burden.

Hope that helps.
