I understand why creature retreating was put in place. I don't necessarily agree, but I understand. However, my complaint is that the way its done is buggy. Let me explain...
I started training a new character recently. He's hunting rats. After dancing for awhile, all of the rats engaged to him flee. Sometimes, the rats flee before he is able to lock tert combat skills with only 10 ranks! But the real question is, why do they ALL flee at once?
But the best is yet to come. After all of the rats flee, they disappear. And they don't always reappear... Today I'm in here with someone else, so I thought the spawn would be better. After all the rats fled from both of us at the same time, they have not reappeared. I've wandered everywhere, including on the barge. They are nowhere to be found. I wrote this entire post while waiting for a single rat to reappear. Seriously, its been about 15 minutes now.
Something seems to be broken with creature spawn. I don't know if its related to creature retreating, but the two things together make it VERY frustrating. This is in TF if that matters.
And finally, why do rats flee from me if a high level character walks in the room? They're rats...
Thanks.
PS - Yay, a rat finally appeared. But please look into the 10-minutes-without-spawn issue.

Critter spawning is not affected in any way by critter retreating. As to them all retreating at once, that's certainly possible if they all spawned at once. That'll happen more often in areas where people just dance and don't, oh, kill things and stuff.

Ok, but why do none spawn for 10-15 minutes straight? I've noticed this in several different hunting areas. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough to be a real issue, at least in TF.

ok, kill things and stuff...
is that what we are limited to now? Killing things and stuff?
is that the purpose of critter retreating? Limit us to killing things and stuff.?
but that's what DR is all about. Limiting our abilities. Lowering player abilities.
I know, I know. Get over it. Move on. Nothing to see here.

In 95% of these cases, something spawned somewhere in the area but people aren't finding it. Yes, it's possible to go 1,2, even 3 minutes without a spawn in some areas if you are having realllllly bad luck, but going beyond that is extremely unlikely unless you are dealing with a critter with intentionally very rare spawn. In a vast majority of the areas in the game, however, the gen rate is such that if you go more than 2 minutes without a spawn, 99% chance something is in there somewhere and you are just not finding it.
With that said, I actually have a pretty good idea what might be happening with the shipyards, and I'll check into it shortly. If there is a problem, it's not in the gen rate, but with things spawning in places that either not everyone can get to or, for that matter, nobody can get to. I'll check on it.
> is that what we are limited to now? Killing things and stuff?
No, you can still dance just fine. You are just going to have to find new dancing partners after 6-10 minutes once the goblin figures out that it can't possibly kill you and goes to find someone maybe it can.
> but that's what DR is all about. Limiting our abilities. Lowering player abilities.
Um....no.
The retreat mechs were put in for multiple reasons which have already been covered by Ssra and others more than enough times already. None of those reasons was to limit player abilities. If the retreat mechs are limiting your abilities, then you are doing something terribly wrong. That may come across as harsh, but I'm sorry...that's just the way it is. It's perfectly possible to effectively train with the new mechanics if you adapt to them rather than just sit around and moan because you can't stand in one place for hours on end and just absorb "free" experience.

My only complaint only comes from lower gen in areas that are pretty big. With the addition of the retreat if i ever find 2 critters to dance with, one leaves before i can learn any multi from it because it took it so long to show up.
I do understand hunting requires movement. It's nothing wrong with creatures having a population boom at times to compensate. My biggest issues are with the hunter's glade and Forest area in P5. I can find critters, but finding enough critters to dance with when I'm solo hunting, is at times frustrating.

We are working on some solutions to the "big area" syndrome. Yes, they can be a problem.
The ship rat situation has been resolved, I think. My first guess was dead on the money, although it was worse than I thought. Basically, the spawn rate itself was reasonable, but the spawn was being shared between non-premium and premium. As a result, it was possible for all the rats to end up in the Premium only area, leaving none for non-premies until the ones in the premium area were killed or despawned via the retreat mechs -- so in reality, the retreat mechs were possibly the only reason non-premies could find rats at all sometimes. Heh.
It actually went one step worse than that with some rats spawning in rooms that are no longer accessible, meaning it was possible for there to be no rats anywhere a player could get to until the retreat/despawn mechs kicked in.
In any case, I've seperated the premium spawn from the non-premium spawn, and removed any overlap with areas that are no longer accessible. As a result rat spawn should be much more consistent overall.

Thanks. I do miss the old parts of the shipyard though. My first DR death was from a silverfish by the three ships on the other side of the office. Good times.

Yeah, it would be nice to sometimes stumble across a room with 3 or 4 enemies already in it. To give multi training more of a purpose and ranged weapons more benefit outside of PVP.
