Also known as open rolls. It's time to get rid of them, regardless.

zoha crit = automatic death (even if the dice said you missed)
open roll = runaway damage-stacking that results in an obscenely large hit, but only if the dice said you would've hit anyways.
One-shot open rolls are the way they are because character stat/skill data is out of whack in relation to the combat calculations, to compensate open rolls were inserted to inject a sense of danger in places where it no longer exists. In essence, open rolls are at least as big a bandaid as ARRANGE was for ranger skinning. To quote a certain blue man, you get "SEMI-PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWERS...eety beety living space."
J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

>>I thought zoha crits were the same as open rolls except for the fact that they could happen anywhere, even goblins no matter how many combat skills you have?
Bingo.
And on the topic of open rolls... yes, I too hate them. I've had more than I ever care to count. That being said - if an open roll once every 5-10 hours of hunting is the cost for being untouched 99.9995% of the time then I'm OK with that.
I'm not OK with having to constantly stop hunting every 5 minutes because I'm bleeding from every pore on my body. In part this is why I'm scared about the damage rewrite. I want to avoid the insta-death 1 shot in PvP which is so common but I don't want to find myself getting cut open every 5th swing while I try and learn MO.

I've been reading up on WoW lately, and it seems they have something somewhat similar to open rolls called crushing blows (150% damage of a normal blow). At a certain point you can become immune to the crushing blow.

Now I'm not sure exactly how open rolls are calculated, but perhaps after a certain amount of defensive training you can become immune to open rolls. I can see this being a nice perk for Paladins being a defensive-oriented guild -- perhaps they can reach immunity before other guilds.
Or of course we can just fix armor scaling.
