When Should I be able to appraise for damage and the like?

Non traders get consistent certains on damage with 175-200 combined ranks using appraise careful, iirc.

Closer to the 200 side, I believe. At least that's where I got them. And I'm under the impression that you start getting weights at ~350 combined ranks.

Sounds about right, with a modifier for weight. Lighter items like skinning knives are easier to get certains on than 120 stone mattocks.

Are you even sure that weights are under combined ranks? Doesn't seem like knowing a lot about HE would give you any more clue on the weight. I know when i hit around 250 appraisal, I started getting confidant's on the weight on everything, not just my best weapons and armor. I'm pretty sure weight is just a straight appraisal check. Of course, I haven't done extensive testing... just my initial observations.

After checking with a few characters, I'd have to agree with Wighten. I don't have any traders with high enough appraisal to check, but for non-traders it seems to be around 275-300 appraisal to start getting weights, and not with any consistancy.
My impression was being based off of a moon mage character with few armor/weapon ranks but high appraisal. My mistake for not verifying that appraisal was weighted more than weapon skill.
