Okay, I'm damn tired of being another barbarian with another bastard sword. Sooooo I will ask a question I'm sure has been answered many time but am too lazy to go look for.

Is there some form of HE axe, forged or not, that is actually viable?

I am a Gor'Tog with Strength 36, Agility 24, Reflexes 26

And in a related question, I have heard that axes in general have much poorer balance, how much is this going to cause me problems as I use Parry as my primary melee defense?

Yes. Battle axes (forged), so you can customize the weight.

<<Is there some form of HE axe, forged or not, that is actually viable?>>

It could be, sure.

<<And in a related question, I have heard that axes in general have much poorer balance>>

Depends on the density (weight) of the battle axe. Usually poor balance is what you'll notice on them, but that is highly dependant on the weight and skill of the smith.

<<how much is this going to cause me problems as I use Parry as my primary melee defense?>>

Well, that depends. It'll cause you problems if you are getting hit regularly at the creature you're hunting with a fair balanced bastard sword (in Heavy Edged form). If you are regularly dodging/parrying the creature(s) you are hunting, than a battle axe would be a reasonable choice to use.

Raise your reflexes, use badger or wolverine dance for defense in your situation. Or use berserk stone and/or cyclone for defense also in your situation. Of course, use your roar techniques to help you out (I don't have your list off hand, so can't give advice on which ones to use).

If you want to start using a battle axe while still not losing too much for your swing time, try raising your strength and agility (strength will matter more, since axes are more directed toward power to suitedness than balance). The benefits of a heavier battle axe beyond improved puncture (small degree), slice (larger degree), impact (larger degree) is your suitedness will increase as well on the heavier battle axes and the axe will be made more sturdy potentially (although, that's going to be highly dependant on the hardness level of the ingot made by the smith).

Didn't I just answer this question?

Read messages 1263-1270 in this folder. Battle Axes are comparable to bastard sword, and outperform broadswords, in the majority of situations.

If you are looking for an alternative to a bastard sword, you can try the swappable axe sold in SCC.
