Anyone have the appraisal of both modes on a perfect grind 36 stone bastard sword? Would be very much appreciated.

Mine appraises as:

A gleaming silver sword is a heavy edged melee-ranged weapon.

You are certain that it could do:
poor (2/25) puncture damage
great (11/25) slice damage
low (3/25) impact damage

You are certain that the sword is reasonably (7/13) balanced and is fairly (5/13) suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.

A gleaming silver sword is a two-handed edged melee-ranged weapon.

You are certain that it could do:
low (3/25) puncture damage
very severe (14/25) slice damage
fair (5/25) impact damage

You are certain that the sword is soundly (8/13) balanced and is reasonably (7/13) suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.

You are certain that the gleaming silver sword is of average construction (9/18), and is in pristine condition (98-100%).

The gleaming silver sword is made with metal.
You are certain that the gleaming silver sword weighs exactly 36 stones.
You are certain that the gleaming silver sword is worth exactly 12500 kronars.

That is a near perfect bastie. Perfect would have low puncture on the HE side.

Consider me extremely skeptical. Even the new app ranges are 5 points. As far as I know, no forgers ever bothered to optimize their mixes for anything other than word appraisals. But if anyone out there knows the exact apps on their mixes, I'd love to be corrected. I posted some myself, about a week ago.

I'd argue that that is the perfect bastie. As you may note from the value appraisal, it's old, and if I still had the formula I used (3 computers or so ago) I doubt I would be able to duplicate it.

I'm sorry but I'm not comfortable calling something perfect without knowing it's actual stats. Was another stat sacrificed a few points to boost the puncture rating? If you just go off of the appraisal verb you can't tell these things.

Yep, you would have lost a little impact. It's called "perfect" because it's all 19 grinds without a frown. That's about it.

Basically what Pendus said - it's just all perfect grinds with a fairly pointless (PUN) puncture grind at the end for prettification. It's overrated and the description is inaccurate.

Isn't perfect 20 grinds without a frown? Or is it an OBOE? Either way, I appreciate the input.

I was pretty sure 19 grinds was the max. That could be wrong. I never grind to the max.

It's really just a term used. Really the bastard sword without the grinds would be perfect. But the 36 stone bastard sword is unique in that using all 19 possible grinds changes the "word" appraisal of it.

ie, slice to great in 8 grinds, puncture to low in 1 grind, balance to reasonable on 10 grinds. All grinds has to be successful to get that which is pretty hard\lucky.

I am not sure the origin of the term but it's possibly taken from analyzing the weapon. If you analyze a weapon that has no failed grinds (frowns) it says:

>analyze my sword
The bastard sword is a forged two-handed edged weapon.
It was made by someone with abilities close to your own skill.
It is 1% damaged.
You notice some mistakes were made in its manufacture.
It is a simple piece to make.
Obviously, this was made by an apprentice level smith.

The bolded line above would say it was perfect if all grinds were successful.

ALSO, on a side note, when did this line appear?

--> It is 1% damaged.

Is the percentage something new or something I am now picking up?

It has been there a very long time, I think the whole time, you just might have not analyzed a weapon when it was damaged before. Now with the damage through use I'm sure you'll see it more.
