Looking to buy a forged short sword and wanted to get some info on prices and stats.
I'm looking for something with high puncture (Not sure if short sword already implies
mostly puncture damage, if so, disregard), and hopefully decent balance, but a high
puncture rating is most important. Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

P.S - If this isn't the appropriate folder I apologize and I will repost.

>>>I'm looking for something with high puncture

And from what I've gathered, the highest puncture available is moderate. And that's with the rare metals.

>>>and hopefully decent balance,

Which is inherent, IMO, in a short sword. Unless you're the type that wants to carry around a 40 stone short sword, you won't have too many problems with that.

>>>P.S - If this isn't the appropriate folder I apologize and I will repost.

Nope. Right folder.

Personally, I'll settle for a fair/fair/low-to-fair d/r 20-25 stone LE myself. My Dirge stout short sword (f/l/p d/r 18 if I remember right) is starting to get a little weak for me.

Hmm. I'm actually using a dirge short sword at the moment as well. And from what I've
heard, this is pretty much the best store bought LE around, for stabbing purposes
anyway. I guess it would be silly to spend a whole lot of money just to go from fair
to moderate (Moderate is directly above fair, correct?). Is moderate puncture really
the best forgers can do? If so, can anyone offer any reason why I shouldn't just start
training ME..?

Right now the templates for forged LE's arent that great and from what I understand to get mod puncture with a short sword either requires rare metals or a heavy, less balanced steel version.

Toss up btwn Shrike in Knife clan and the stout short sword. Off the top of my head...

Stout SS is Fair/Low/Poor Reasonably/Poor Stones: 20
Shrike is Fair/Poor/Poor Well/Dismally Stones: 18 ... i think.

Both are Fairly Sturdy... Shrike is a more often hitter and 2 stones lighter...

Stout SS will hit a lil lil bit harder if you got the strength.

<<Moderate is directly above fair, correct?

Yea

<<Is moderate puncture really the best forgers can do?

its not forgers ... its what they have to work with... LE's have been crappy on the forge for a while now. That is said to change with a template rewrite... When is that? Hopefully during HSN....

<<If so, can anyone offer any reason why I shouldn't just start training ME..?

LE's could change pretty soon?! maybe.. hopefully... I train both LE and ME LE katar and ME scim.... i love them both... i know this will prolly start up some conflict or something, but Slicers rock... unless your a pocket inspector.... then jab away

No reason whatsoever. But don't simply substitute it. Train both. Or more than just the two. Personally, I have my bard training 6 weapons right now. All 4 edged types, plus short bow and brawling. It's nice to be able to keep on fighting without going into sleep mode all the time. Not to mention my empath training 3 weapons (ME, QS, and brawling).

A variety of weapons means you have a variety of options when it comes to combat. Something not dying because it's slice-resistant? Switch to the jabber. Puncture resistant? Break out the slicer. Kill you in melee? Use missile.

Thanks for all the replies folks, think I'm gonna go ahead and move ME up ahead of LE but I'll still continue training both. Hopefully when those new templates I'll have enough to buy a really good forged.

Just picked up one, really lightly crafted for my gnomish strength. Any tips on a good combo for using it that won't have me at 0 fatigue? I have 20 stamina and thrusting/lunging has me falling over.

Use brawling so you can throw in an occasional circle-bob-weave. Or you could go to stance shield and let the critters knock themselves out while you rest.

Good luck!

If you get low on fatigue use "feint lunge" instead of lunge.

Kind of a waste unless you're a thief. I'd say get a jambiya (for free) and switch to a slicing combo. I hate the lunge stuffs.

And just in case it gets asked, a Jambiya is an 18 stone LE f/f/p r/f fairly sturdy.

I agree, jabber LEs are junk. You'd think they would be good for low strength/stamina characters, but the moves carry heavy defensive penalties and are highly fatiguing. The jambiya would probably be much easier for you to use.

I'll recommend the jambiya as well. I only use the forged shortsword on my baby barb during berserks against things he kills fairly easily and I honestly don't notice it killing faster than the jambiya in the same situation.

Ask around in Riverhaven and look on the donation racks in the Barbarian and Ranger guild. I usually put a few there after hunting.

Head up to Riverhaven and find Redarch. He usually harvests them by the packload and drops them off at the crate in front of the empath guild for folks to have.

They drop off of, what is it, Cinderbeasts? Heirophants?

Either way, it's a really bit evil critter in the cleric rezz quest area.
