Im thinking of going with HX and Long Bow instead of My ME, but im currious if lets say i had 70 ranks in shield and 70 ranks in parry and had my stance split evenly between the two, which one would provide better protection/more consistant protection/ect. Is this a big variable or is there a way to dwindle this down to an absolute? Im a ranger, im a gnome, i have a ton of reflex, and on a post somewere, i cant remember where, someone said wisdom improved evasion. Can anyone answer all of this without making more questions out of it? Someone who knows what they are talking about, and not just someone who likes to talk.

Can't comment as to your question but I see you say you might pick up two ranged weapons and drop your training of a melee weapon? I would highly reccomend you always train at least one melee weapon. It might be easier to hit with ranged weapons and to do more damage(at least now) but there are critters out there that are about impossible to bring down with ranged weapons(celpeze I believe, can't aim at them) and I wouldn't be surprised if more come out at some point or if abilities come out that make it easier to block or avoid missiles you will be in a bad position.

Short form:
Shield protects against almost every attack in the game, except for 3 combat spells (DFA) and any of the non-skill-based attacks/spells.
Parry only protects (for non-Paladins/non-Barbarians) against melee attacks.
IMO, Parry provides a much better defense at the same ranks in melee than Shield does, but this is also modified by any multiple opponent penalties and character balance, both of which affect Parry more than Shield. Not even counting any abilities or spells which give a bonus or penalty to you to either skill.

I have a number of chars with shield and parry about equal. When the stances are about the same, shield usually blocks attacks before parry does, more so if you're talking about ranged attacks. However, if you're hunting and don't have an arm-worn shield you're going to be pretty well depending on parry while you're skinning.

Not only does shield protect against more attacks than parry, but it protects more often than parry (stuns, prone, immobilized, etc).
Shame shield is tertiary while parry is secondary for me. But that hasn't stopped me from keeping shield within 40 ranks of parry while closing in on 400 ranks.
