The FLEE verb is now live in Plat.

The flee verb will allow a player to disengage and clear themselves from combat by exiting through an obvious path, portal, or direction. In some cases, where a path is not obvious or the room has special contests to see if you can leave (swimming for example) you will not leave the room but it will clear you from engagement to afford you the chance to exit as you normally would.

The ability contests and teaches escaping vs. attacker weapon skill. Success is automatic unless you find yourself incapacitated in anyway during the attempt to flee. Your escaping skill works to reduce the timer on flee thus increasing your odds of success. Therefore, any ability that bonuses escaping skill or adds a positive engagement modifier to your character will enhance your ability to flee.

Barbarians and Paladins will take a somewhat trivial hit to inner fire or soul if they flee.

Thieves who have sufficient escaping skill may find they have a special ability they can utilize.

Also, there are a number of silly messages for role-play purposes.

Questions, comments, bugs, rants, and raves should be directed to the Combat - Weapons and Armor -> Tactics folder.

Thank you.

How well does this teach escaping? Is it a viable option to train it?

Wow, cool! So with about 30 ranks of escaping I could go down to something like cougars and train escaping by playing chicken little regardless of my other combat skills?

Something tells me I shouldn't try my 30 ranks of escaping against a shalswar ... :)

Ssra, if my character has more brawling than the weapon I currently have in hand can it please contest the brawling skill instead of the held weapon? Just a perk to training brawling.

You can specify the direction or portal or you can let it randomly pick one.

Any room that has fog, is dark, or has a special contest to move (swimming) will keep you in the same room regardless but it will clear you out of combat so you can move as your normally would.

Looking forward to trying this out when it comes to Prime. Your work is appreciated, Ssra.

Quick question - What can I expect in regard to success rate and training for a young character with single-digit escaping on something like, say, blood wolves? Total failure and poor training? If this is a PAFO deal no worries, I'll wait to use it. :)

While I understand the idea of the soul hit, the fact that retreating doesn't hurt soul, and that paladins really have no means of training escaping aside from fleeing, I don't really see it as a viable option of training escaping for a paladin, because soul hits can build up.

Any word on this?

If you don't get stunned, knocked over, etc. while fleeing you can do it but it probably won't teach very well. It's a lot like skinning in terms of experience. You want to flee from things that have comparable attack skill vs. your escaping.

Flee != Retreat

The penalty is pretty small.

If the small soul hit isn't worth the experience, then don't use flee to train escaping.

I've been testing this .. Hunting at level it seemed to give me a bit of an evasion hit when I failed to flee. I was holding my own fine against 3 Blight ogres and started getting creamated when my flee failed. Didn't seem to hurt me in the midst of the flee though, you can't do anything while fleeing .. can't check experience or retreat on your own. Hunting at level I failed once and succeeded once. I'm heading to a couple more hunting areas to play with it more extensively.

Learning wise, I went from clear to pondering with one flee, at 50 ranks in escaping -- using vines in Theren which are way below me combat-wise. I forgot to check my learning rate when I used it at level but I don't think it was any higher. There does appear to be a timer to learning from it, but its not a bad one.

I absolutely love it, the messaging is great!

It doesn't directly reduce any skill but check your balance and fatigue afterwards - it does reduce those.

New question, just for curiosity's sake. Was it hard to code? Seems like it factors in a fair amount of combat variables.

Does it effect experience gain? Is gain based off of the base ranks of the creature, or their effective ranks?

What about boosting your escape through magical means? I know it helps your attempt, but will it decrease your experience?

Saying that it's "a lot like skinning" worries me. :)

It's a survival skill so I'd say effective skill. Does our bonus affect escaping? I know the ranger bonus doesn't affect every survival skill.

Quesiton. I understand this part:

>Any room that has fog, is dark, or has a special contest to move (swimming) will keep you in the same room regardless but it will clear you out of combat so you can move as your normally would.

However, with a certain ability, Pythea can see in the dark, and therefore, see available exits. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to matter with flee:

A pale Gnome runs through the area screaming, "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! FLEEEEE!"

>
Soft plumes of golden light blossom deep within the imperial topaz on your forehead, playing off the skin around your eyes.

You blink.

[You're battered, off balance with opponent in strong position.]

[You're battered, off balance with opponent in very strong position.]
>flee

For some inexplicable reason, you can't flee from this area. You frantically attempt to disengage from combat.
>flee

You are already attempting to flee!
>* A nightreaver unyn lunges with venom-dripping mandibles at you. You slap away most of the fangs with a scimitar.
The fangs lands a good strike that barely punctures the skin on the upper chest causing a slight welt.
[You're winded, battered, somewhat off balance with opponent in excellent position.]

It's all a blur!

You manage to free yourself from engagement and look to make an escape.
Your enhanced sight lets you see...

[Upper Caverns]
Passages lead out of the large chamber like spokes from the hub of a wagon wheel. Dust and rubble cover the floor in cluttered disarray. The ceiling is lost behind many layers of webbing, old and new, as if to hold back the falling stone of the roof. A small cairn stands in the center of the room. You also see a nightreaver unyn, a nightreaver unyn, and a nightreaver unyn that appears stunned.
Obvious exits: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest.

Any way you'd think about allowances for sight, perhaps?

Those areas tend to check to see if the player can see before they move. Given I can't possibly add support for every possible room in the game at the initial release it will still let you flee, it just won't move you.

As I get time I'll add certain areas but I have to organize that with the province owner and such.

Something seems a bit off.

I can successfully flee from a polo, which I dont think I should. I only have around 100 escaping, yet I'm still able to flee from polo's whos weapon skill is a lot higher.

I dont seem to be learning it very well either. (Even though I am successful in fleeing.) I'm a bit confused as to how this is suppose to work. I thought you got fatigued and off balance on a failed flee.

Doesnt seem to take long too flee. Which is a good thing.

However, could we also get some messaging for fatigue/balance hits. I noticed my fatigue pulsed twice, before I fled. So did my balance.

It's working as it should Falk.

If you had better escaping skill the balance and fatigue hit would be minimal. Your escaping skill works to minimize the balance/fatigue reduction. It doens't necessarily dictate if you pass or fail. The object is to not get stunned, webbed, fall prone, etc. while the timer is counting down.
