I like to keep boxes in my hunting as much as possible (even if the box drop rates aren't great), so that when there are whole rungs on the ladder where there are no good options, I don't have to back train too much when the next rung does include an option for boxes again.
If I remember correctly, I went something like this:
Goblins, until soft cap.
Grass eels, until I can survive hounds/reavers.
Hounds/Reavers, until I can survive Malodorous Bucca. Wind hounds can be annoying because there are no coins/gems/boxes/skins, but they teach well enough, and Reavers drop everything.
Malodorous Bucca, until I can survive Rock Trolls.
Rock Trolls, until soft cap.
