Question for the wise here.

As a Paladin with my skills, listed below (backtraining weapons excluded), I need to dance with 4 swains to get my HP moving. Any fewer and it barely budges. That said, Swains still move my HE, 2HE, and brawling just fine. Same for my shield and multi. As for evasion and parry, I'm trying to work those up on leucs, especially evasion.

So the question is: When is it right to move on from a critter? When one skill, like HP, stops learning well? It seems to me that I should stick around and close the gap on parry and evasion a bit before doing so. Thoughts? Also, how is my multi?

Shield Usage 170 22% riveted Heavy Edged 130
Light Plate 107 10% dabbling Heavy Plate 163 55% considering
Parry Ability 137 09% dabbling Multi Opponent 139 57% scrutinizing
Twohanded Edged 123 72% engaged
Holy Magic 130 92% dabbling Harness Ability 133 12% perusing
Evasion 104 82% studious
Brawling 110

Perhaps I should lower my shield stance so that the swains hit me more. Any advice is appreciated.

Bloodvines in Hib will teach phenomenally in that range.

First tier Nipoh Oshu, on Aesry, may teach, just be mindful of the swarms (I don't think, as of yet, you'll be able to handle 4).

My honest recommendation is the Oshu route. They are, without a doubt, some of the best trainers in the game.

Your evasion is a little low but that's expected with your survival skillset placement. Your multi looks fine though. If you think you should stick in that area and milk more evasion, what I'd do is pick up another armor if HP isn't learning much. Are you evading a lot of attacks or blocking? I ask because if you're evading a lot of the attacks armors will learn slowly.

Primarily blocking, unless I drop my shield stance way down.

For some reason I can't get my parry to move anywhere but swain, whereas leucs could still lock my shield (with 4 on me) at 169 ranks.

Weapon skills tend to cap out earlier than defenses. Try lowering your shield but instead of setting evasion higher, put parry at the highest so you parry instead of blocking and evading. Parrying always seemed to teach armor better for me.

What is the deal with these? Last time I hunted there was not long after the islands were opened, and no one hunted there because that steam attack was crazy.

What's changed?

I've not hunted them in a long time- but I believe the steam attack has been brought under control, and is shield-blockable.

Sorry for the late response, but up until yesterday, the Oshu steam attack was actually turned off. That's what made them popular. Now that the steam is back on, I haven't had a chance to go check them out yet to see how crazy it still is.

Aye. Now, this is based on my experience BEFORE the steam attack was re-activated. But with no steam attack, they were like sand sprites on steroids.

Now, the steam attack from before...made them unhuntable. It was a fairly consistent attack in their routine, and it covers you in burns (bruises?) from head to toe. A couple hits from it, and you're nearly barbequed.

No clue how it is now, with the attack turned back on. I'll check it out and let you know.

Difficult, but not impossible for me to get an ES. I'm a ranger. ES scrolls do exist, I think, but I don't think I've ever seen one.

As for runes, do ES runes exist? I don't really mess with runestones much, so...

Hafaltu runes have ES; they're not exactly common. The only place I know of that sells them is the Trader's shop on Ratha for 3.5 plat.

Creatures do still drop ES scrolls, but it's a somewhat rare drop.

Anyone know if necromancer spells like worm's mist or calcified hide would help against the steam attack?

Yeah, I was IG when they sent the announcement about the oshu steam attack being reactivated. I was actually sitting on the dock, waiting on the boat to Aesry.

When I saw that announcement, I changed my plans.

I don't understand the big deal. After sitting with a room full of six oshu with a friend, not killing any, not moving away from the steam, this is what I've got after about an hour to an hour and a half:

Your body feels slightly battered.
Your spirit feels full of life.
You have some minor abrasions to the head, some minor abrasions to the neck, some minor abrasions to the right arm, some minor abrasions to the left arm, some minor abrasions to the right leg, some minor abrasions to the left leg, some minor abrasions to the chest, some minor abrasions to the abdomen, some minor abrasions to the back, some minor abrasions to the right eye, some minor abrasions to the left eye.
You have no significant injuries.

Third-tier oshu with all defenses between 178 and 336.

Some people are just turned off by special attacks.

They are perfectly huntable, there are just more hassle-free creatures to hunt.

>>Some people are just turned off by special attacks.<<

Sad, but true. What "some people" may not realize is that the higher they go up the critter ladder, the more difficult it will be to find critters that DON'T have a special attack. I have yet to find a critter that was un-huntable, and some critters definitely appear to be aimed/designed for a specific guilds. I have no issues with that either. Adds to the flavor of the game.

Sun vultures. Also the previous version of stone-throwing imps. (I was getting hurt/stunned with 930s evasion and 99 reflex for a creature that teaches combats to about 100.) Also, the fire sprite area with the noxious gasses. I actually managed to die there in short order (about 20 minutes) due to an internal bleeder... with 99 stamina/discipline. Moneygrubbers can still stun me if I don't use a shield as well.

Granted, I've not been hunting them long, but I don't see how anyone who is not hunting over his or her head could possibly even die at the hands of nipoh oshu... or at their appendages... whatever. It's like they're the ship's rats of the 200-300 range. For the training rate, I'll be happy to walk out with a bunch of scuffs but no serious injuries after three hours of sitting rather than the chance of a stupid open-roll insta-kill somewhere else.

Insta-kill open rolls are a lot less common than they used to be after the last round of combat tweaks.

This I did not know... makes me happy for when I transition out of the caves.
