Your typical WTH post, I am a Bard currently in Swamp Trolls and they are still teaching my HE, but very slowly. I went to Peccs/Trolls today and they beat the heck out of me, so am wondering if there is something inbetween in the Haven/Lang/Theren area?

Heavy Edged: 163 69%
Medium Edged: 137 08%
Light Chain: 138 70%
Heavy Plate: 101 68%
Skinning: 115 67%

Multi Opponent: 130 99%
Shield Usage: 122 85%
Parry Ability: 134 35%
Evasion: 114 79%

My real problem is the lower skills there, I'm pretty sure they are helping me get hurt in Peccs. :P Am I looking at backtraining for a while?

Thanks!

I wouldn't call what you need "backtraining" so much as just needing to let your defenses catch up to your primary weapon a bit. There's not that much of a spread, so depending on how intensively you train, it shouldn't take long.

My suggestion would be brocket deer. Probably the first (young) or second (no adjective) tier of them. I tend to give that advice a lot, and the hunting area is fairly full up a lot now of the days during prime times, but for the area you're looking to stay in, I believe they're the best bet.

Additionally, if you have a Premium account, the viper area near Haven and past frogs might be a worthwhile option to look into. The downside there is that it's shallow water, which won't bother your defenses, but will prevent you from training perception and stalking with the HUNT verb, if you use it.

Blayd, just to echo the other folks here, it really is more a matter of keeping your defenses >= your weapons. Judging from your HE, I'd guess you're around early to mid 50s? As a point of reference, here's my 54th bard who just (as in yesterday) left vipers for leucros. If you want any tips, feel free to AIM me at kiritsuke

Shield Usage: 176 46% perusing (2/34) Leather Armor: 173 77% nearly locked (33/34)
Light Chain: 169 86% understanding (14/34) Light Plate: 127 53% focused (20/34)
Parry Ability: 176 99% mind lock (34/34)
Multi Opponent: 201 55% very engaged (23/34)
Medium Edged: 145 73% dabbling (1/34) Quarter Staff: 133 16% dabbling (1/34)
Halberds: 159 80% thinking (5/34)
Light Thrown: 172 32% dabbling (1/34)
Offhand Weapon: 155 57% pondering (7/34) Targeted Magic: 160 89% ruminating (8/34)
Evasion: 181 47% mind lock (34/34)

Yep 54th Bard and 2 ranks of HE to 55.

Great suggestions thank you.

I used to extensively hunt in Vines/Creepers until the learning rate really slowed down. Then headed to Swamp Trolls. I thought the vines etc wouldn't teach any more but I will go check it out.

I had a feeling someone would mention Brockett Deer - I tend to hunt late at night anyway, so hopefully the deer won't be quite as busy :P The one problem with them is that I don't get any boxes, but I can swing back to Swamp Trolls for that if I need to. Vipers weren't bad so I'll try them again as well...I think I was a bit lower when I was in there so they should be fine by now.

Thanks!

Bumping this. I've just returned from a very long hiatus. Looking for something in the Crossing-to-Theren type area.

Shield is my lowest skill I'm looking to train at about 125, and all my other defenses and weapons are in the 140-180 range, with TM the highest combat skill pushing 200.

Skinning and box skills are in the mid 80s low 90s, so something nearby to whatever it is would be nice to be able to swing by and learn them up a bit. I tromped around Haven swamp trolls today, but they don't really teach much in the way of defenses besides shield and I didn't even pretend they could teach me magic.

Thanks.

In haven you could do daytime barghests for weapons/skinning. Langenfirth peccs/swamp trolls(some boxes). Mid-tier brocket deers. Black leucros might be your sweet spot, depending on the spread of your defenses.

What in the world is a brocket deer, and where would I find it?

I had considered Lang trolls/pecs, so good to know I still have an idea of what they take to hunt and I'm on the right track. My parry is well higher than any melee weapon skill. I'm at about 160 for evasion and 180 for parry.

It's a killable, skinnable widget found west of Lang and over the fence.

Very swarmy. Love brocket deer. There's 3 tiers of them... Young, Adult, and Elder. Great training. Adult should teach you well.

Brockett Deer are located here in the Lang area:

http://www.elanthipedia.com/wiki/RanikMap148

However, the area is really small and crowded. Kind of like eels were before they expanded the area. There's a lot of competition for very few spots. You might also try vipers in Haven or crocs to backtrain shield.

This link will give you some ideas for critters in the ranges you want to hunt:

I tried brocket deer around that range and for some reason I could barely move weapons/backstab there. Vipers/serpents in Haven is where it's at, then move to just vipers near Crossing when those start to slow down. Move weapons really nicely (although parry is hard to learn if your evasion is lacking with the poison) and the skins are worth a decent coin.

When you say "adult" deer do you mean the Red or the Elder?

The Red were pretty good, moved some weapon moved some shield. The Elder I had to basically kill as fast as I could with all my buffs up to not get overwhelmed, and eventually I got snowed under. I might try the Reds again if that's a good range for weapon training.

I'm in a decent position for training, because parry, evasion, armor and multi opponent are all higher than my physical weapons. I have been locking shield in swampies/peccs by stancing down evasion and if things get hairy swapping stances back to something fully protective.

Red.

A bunch of creatures are divided into young-adult-elder now, so it's a convention.

Locked my evasion and shield, didn't lock parry or my highest weapon. Moved skinning really well though!

So just to update, I have run around a bit and tried:

Brockett Deer - easy are too easy, medium ended up killing me when they swarmed, but moved skills well. Downside, no boxes and in Lang. Major downside is how busy they are and how small the area is.

Vipers - Pretty easy to kill, and am not getting hit by poison with shield up. Also works my swimming and the sacs seem to sell quite well AND move my skinning. Downside is again no boxes, no great spawn in Haven grounds (lots of serpents though).

Barghests - day is good, night is bad :P Again no boxes but are close to Haven.

Small Peccs - good and fairly easy to kill, but I found with several on me and a Swamp Troll adding to that, it got a bit too hairy for me. I think once I move up some of my skills this is my sweet spot. Downside, again in Lang and no boxes. But at least the trolls drop loot.

I'm off to try Giant Black Leucros next.

Has anyone tried the Golden Scaled Atik'ets in Gate of Souls, the Spiny Dyrachis near Haven, or the Orc Scouts in Rossman's? I'm guessing the Orcs/Warcats are out of my league for another 20 ranks or so.

Swamp trolls drop boxes, just not frequently. There are also some easier ones east of Haven.

Around that level I did vipers > black leucros > hardest swampies/fens > elder deer.

That took me from around 140s to 300s in evasion and around 250s in the rest of my defenses and weapons.

You will get beat up pretty badly in some of those spots, but probably the best training that I found for that level.

I would get around 170s in your defenses and give regular deer a try again. I wish I had found them earlier.

Swamp trolls and I have had a long acquaintance :P They seem to drop boxes a bit more than they used to, but I may just have been lucky.

So, it is obviously my defenses that got me killed in deer - I may be close to 170 in my weapons, but nowhere near that otherwise...I guess I have to keep working on those, thanks!

Ati'kets are a bit fun, have you tried river sprites south of Crossing at all? They do really well for this range, plus teach a bit of perception. Unfortunately, no skinning.
