Are there any other creatures on the mainland (must be within walking/swimming/climbing distance of Crossing or I'm not interested) that are a similar level to Young or Mature gryphons? The Young+Fledging gryphons teach me really well but there's only 4 rooms which are camped 24/7 so they pretty much aren't an option. Mature gryphons would actually be perfect if they'd ever land on the goddamn ground, but I can't kill them while they're in the air so these spots aren't really an option for me either.
I tried muscular firecats but apparently they spawn like once a year, and the supple firecats + Ati'kets are too easy to teach all that great. Are there any other options I can try? Must be within 5-10 minutes of Crossing, and it can't have a weapon or shield or else I won't be able to hit it (weapons tertiary plus no combat abilities = can only hunt creatures without parry/shield)

Maybe shalswar, which are in the Shard area (technically Forf, but very Shard accessible). This might be stretching your definition of "walking/swimming/climbing distance of Crossing", depending on if you have the climbing to bypass the gondola. They're also paired with DPs, which you won't be able to hit. Survival + armor secondary might mean you can just ignore them, though.
Alternatively, wir dinego? Those are near Kaerna, so quite close.

Try Shard instead of Rossmans?

Well that really makes it tough. Bristlebacks don't work?
Individuals, families, countries, continents are destroyed at the heavy hand of Vinjince.

Apu,
You could try sinuous elsraels and big fendryads in the water under the Lang hummocks. Pretty sure I was in the mid-300s in defense when I started playing with them. Being in the water seems to lessen attack factors and there's no HUNT or stealth, but they took me from 350s to low 400s in defense and 250 to low 300s in weapons.
Another candidate might be misshapen germish'din under the Leth manor. They may be a bit strong for you, but I was only getting mildly dinged with low 400's in defense when I first wandered in and their teaching weapons from 250 to 350 great.
Surviving in both of the above areas would entirely depend on your own stats and skills of course, just thought I'd mention them since they're both pretty underhunted and swarm pretty well if your main purpose is training.

Thanks for all the replies, this info should help me alot (I'm moving across country at the moment though so can't test anything out for a few more days).
Bristleback peccaries sound like they might be ideal, somehow I missed the fact that they were in Rossman's and not just M'riss. That's close enough to gryphons that it's easy to just go check for a hunting spot there, and run over to peccaries as a backup plan
I actually tried the armored warklins this morning, those would've worked pretty well except the stupid warklin maulers being damn near immune to slice damage. I could kill the warklins fine, and dance with 4 of either of them, but the maulers may as well be flying creatures because either way I can't touch them. If there was a spot with only the armored warklins then it might work fine
I want to avoid any of the Shard hunting options until I get enough climbing to skip the Gondola, but I'm actually getting pretty close so I might revisit those ideas when I do get enough skill
Also I had been looking at the misshapen germishdin before, but elanthipedia says they can steal your weapon and throw it into the next room - is that still true? There's no way I'm fighting anything that can take my weapon away, last time I did that in scavenger trolls I ended up having to get someone to help kill all the trolls on me so I could get my weapons back

They're both supposed to be slice resistant, heh.

While I like the bristle back peccs in Rossman's, the spawn is horrible unless you've got additional people in the area. If you're the only one there, all you'll get is some defensive training because they don't spawn well enough to do anything for weapons.

This.
And when there are people in there, and they are just dancing, they get your spawn and you may get 1 or 2 if you are lucky.

I've been hunting in there since Thanksgiving at least a couple hours most days and I've neither been hit by that attack nor seen messaging that indicates I escaped it. I remember people posting about it years ago, but I've seen no evidence of it. Maybe it was one of those special attacks that got turned off a while ago?
Note that I'm a bard and hunting with a 35 to 40 mana Harmony enchante running nearly all the time, so the buff from that may account for my results.
Not to say they don't hit hard. When I started in there with defenses around 400, I got dead in one hit a couple times. Now with mid-400 defenses, I can dance with 4 and only get an occasional bleeder, barring my own mistakes.

Just wanted to throw my vote in for Bristles - I rode these out for quite a while with marginal issues getting all of my defenses and weapons (and stealths actually) moving until I was ready for Shalswars. As previously stated, the gen can be a pain sometimes but they were great for post Gryphs.
I also wouldn't recommend making a jump right from Gryphons to Shalswars - I left Bristles a good 3-4 months ago and despite training constantly in Shals I still get open rolled from time to time. I think it'd be a tough jump.

If you're really at the end of youngs gryphons, and don't want to deal with zealot parrying, warklins in the abandoned mine off the NTR is a good spot. They are slice resistant, but are quite killable with slicers. Plan B if you don't like those is DP purifiers. They have their own area north of the shal corral.
Ratha celps come to mind as well, but they tended to remove limbs a bit too often right after youngs for me.

I jumped from young gryphons to DP purifiers (just outside of Raven's Point). They can be a bit slow at times but it was a good transition until I could go to south barricade celps on kresh.

>>If you're at the end of young gryphons, and I think that's in the low 400s, that's more than sufficient for Ratha celps. You could also try cinder beasts. I think those teach higher than young gryphons. <<<
Granted Im at the very low low end of 400s and ratha celps are technically doable, but they are truly a pain at this level of skill, I'd recommend going somewhere else for a little bit unless you enjoy getting healed every 10 minutes or so.

it really depends on how you hunt. my necro is able to handle the baby and fledgling gryphons, but can't rteally stnad toe-to-toe with raiders, yet. on the other hand, my thief can wipe out raiders fairly easily, but my necro was able to stand up to more bristle backs than my thief could at a similar level because she trained multi much moreso, and has more multi at 40 circles less than my thief.
so it depends on if you hunt stealth-wize or "barb-style".
