I'm thinking it's finally time to move on up from gryphons, as the learning is getting pretty slow.
I believe the natural progression from here would be celpeze or apes. Can anyone tell me how the whole celpeze poison thing is affecting things, and if apes would be a reasonable alternative? Any other suggestions?

You can take young gryphons in Rossmans higher then what you have. I didnt slow down until about 530, and then they finally capped at 550. I went from young gryphons to apes, but got bored out there, so came back to adult and elder gryphons. Adult/elders taught for a ways past 600. Too bad they spend more time casting spells at you, than attacking. I can still learn weapons pretty easy, as well as hiding, stalking, and skinning.

Hunting young gryphons got tedious because I got more baby/fledgelings than I got youngs. The occasional mature was fine to keep longbow moving. When I tried to move up to Adults their thunderclap got problematic. As someone said, more time flying and casting than fighting.
I bit the bullet and moved out to Ratha to try the baby celps. They are teaching everything awesome, although I think I'm going to need more defense before I can use longbow with any regularity.

You appear to be a Ranger. You and Barbarians have the easiest time training stick bow so long as you train stealth at level.
All you do is put up STW, and do your routine in this order: stalk, load, aim, stop stalk, (you can add in appraise right here if you want) poach. This allows you to use your shield whenever you are out of hiding (assuming you don't get searched out) and you don't suffer any load time penalty.

You seem to be forgetting that occasionally things do spot you. When I load in hiding with 580 hiding, 1 in 5 times a celpeze spots me and pulls out because I try to stay at pole or mêlée to keep the critter from walking into someone else's room with my arrows. If I do get pulled out hiding, the following hits can really hurt. In another 50 or so ranks of hiding/stalk, it probably won't be as much of a problem anymore.
