What am I doing wrong (after Cave Bears)? on 05/23/2012 07:10 AM CDT

I seem to be stuck finding a place I can survive after trying Cave Bears and Bone Wolves and pretty much maxing them out. It seems like somehow I'm getting an extra penalty to my defenses, even though I've worked on my reflex a lot after struggling so much.

I've died in Young/Immature Firecats, Snowbeasts, Blood Wolves and even last night, in Rock Trolls!, even though I'm almost capping them out. Something isn't right and I was hoping someone might have some suggestions of what I'm doing wrong?

My defenses are:

Shield 105
Evasion 96
MO 95
Light Chain 94

Guild - Barbarian.
20 Reflex

My stance has been Evasion 81, Shield 100, and my armor is repaired.

I don't want to use berserks because this character is one I started in Fallen when I joined a couple weeks ago, and I would have to figure out how to handle the berserk dropping. I've been training everything else other than my main weapons and defenses because I can't seem to survive anything tougher than Cave Bears.

What attack combos are you using? Are you noticing you're dying after you use certain attacks?

To expand on Katt's post, sweep and lunge carry massive defensive penalties when used so you shouldn't use them.

Also I've always found the 90-130 skill range to be a tough range for training. There isn't a lot of places to train well, and the ones that are around are pretty tough to use. If you don't mind traveling I've heard that the new boars and silver luecros on Ratha are good for 100+.

I would say MO is the problem; I've hunted those same things and I try to keep only 2 on me. I usually stance 90-91 myself, I go for as much evasion as possible without the entire attack being dodged by evasion alone.

I just left that range and Morah vines/creepers worked absolutely great. Watch your vit though, they have a special attack: put 'coils' into highlights so that it doesn't get lost in the scroll. Other than that, they swarm up really fast and with four of them, defenses lock really fast. I'm getting close to 120 and they're still teaching fast.

I'll try Ratha. Thanks. And I'll have to review my script to try to get rid of sweep.

Don't. Replace it with "feint sweep".

Personally I'd recommend even more reflex if you can swing it. Maybe try out 100 evasion/81 shield stance. Check your burden and your armor hindrance, and switch to lighter armor on some body parts if you are above lightly hindered.

Also I know you said you don't want to use berserks, but Stone would probably be great in your situation.

Last time I played DR armor and weapons only got damaged when you died. So I'm still getting used to having to check if my weapons and armor are any good. And I forgot to check my shield. So I think the problem may have been this:

app shield
You believe that it imposes trivial maneuvering hindrance.

This shield is small in size.

You think it is likely that the target shield is somewhat unsound against damage, and is battered and practically destroyed.

I upped my reflex to 27 and noticed, that I was still getting hit in Firecats. So I got my shield repaired, and hopefully that will make things better.
